I' ve eaten it through my whole pregnancy. When I asked my doctor if I should avoid it she told me not to be ridiculous and to stop googling otherwise I'll be on a boiled chicken diet throughout pregnancy.

Ok so this isn't deli meat related but a pregnant woman here lost her baby because of a listeria outbreak in Brie cheese, I'm not sure how far along she was. I also just found out a freind of mines friend lost her baby well into her second trimester due to listeria but they weren't able to find the source of it after very thorough investigations.

In saying that for my second pregnancy while on holiday for 3 weeks I ate my bodies weight worth of feta cheese because I totally forgot it was on no eating list. I also ate heaps of smoked salmon also on the no eating list.

So really could you get away with eating it every now and then. Probably. Should you eat it everyday ? I wouldn't.

I don't tell DH, but yes, I've been eating deli meat every now and then! If you're really trying to follow the rules though, cooking up a turkey tenderloin with a good amount of salt (I bake it covered at 300 deg. for 40 min) and then slicing it thin is a pretty good facsimile.

I ate the hell out of all deli meat for both pregnancies.

My take is you can get hit by a car when crossing the street, but we still do. Many of the "restrictions" are ridiculous in my book.

Not turkey. That's behind most listeria outbreaks from what I read. I once had a very calculated italian sub in the second trimester - made sure it was from a deli with an A sanitation rating and fast turnover on the meats.

I crave it too, but my dh has a friend who lost a baby at 23 weeks due to listeria (they think from deli meat) and it scares him to death. There is so little that he worries about, and even though i would SO love a turkey sandwich right now, i wont while i am pregnant, mostly out of respect to him.

@yoursilverlining: "Until they start telling pregnant women to avoid fresh fruit and veggies (since those have been the source of recent listeria outbreaks) I'm calling BS on all the food fear-mongering!!"

@SerenaSF: For starters, I think you're fine with any old deli sandwich. Lunch meat is designed to be a ready-to-eat food so companies have to take precautions to avoid listeria contamination. Most lunch meats contain preservatives to prevent growth of pathogens.

If you're still nervous about it you might want to check out Hormel Natural Choice Meats. They are pasteurized after packaging so they're only going to get listeria if you introduce it once you open the package. I'm sure there are other brands of lunch meats that are processed this way also but this is the one that comes to mind.

The 1st pregnancy no. But I craved a cold turkey sandwich like craaazy. I binged on them everyday for weeks after giving birth. This 2nd time I asked my OB who said deli meat is fine for pregnant women, just be aware of the high sodium. So I am eating my cold turkey sandwiches (low sodium Boar's Head) every week and shaking my head for torturing myself the first time lol.

I didn't, but I mainly wasn't interested. My MW said they advise against it but if you choose to eat it, go to a high-volume place because the meat is likely to be fresher there. If I'd ever really craved a sandwich, that's what I would have done.

I felt the same way! I craved a turkey sandwich all through my pregnancy but I was always too nervous to actually eat it. Got jimmy johns in the hospital the night I delivered though!! The nurse said that almost every mom wants either jimmy johns or pizza right after they deliver (not that pizza is off limits-- but there is a really good pizza place right by the hospital haha)
