I am so impressed with those who run while pregnant. I get winded walking up the stairs to the el every day!

If you were doing it before, it will be fine now. I've been running and doing weight training like usual and haven't had any issues. I just fatigue more quickly.

I'd actually recommend weight training as a good addition to your workout, especially for later in the pregnancy when you get heavier. You get a great burn without all of the jolting around. The bike is a great jolt-free cardio alternative as well.

I'm not a runner, but I know a good number of women who ran throughout their pregnancies. I know at least three who wore heart monitors while running to make sure they didn't go above 140 beats/min. As long as your doc okays it, you should be fine.

I have heard it's okay with doctor's permission, so I would ask your doctor when you call to set up your first appointment what their recommendation is.

I ran up until about 20 weeks, at that point my belly was starting to jiggle uncomfortably. I just slowed down the pace a little and took some walking breaks in there.

I run, and I'm 13 weeks. Just be careful about overheating and take walk breaks If you need it!

Running shouldn't be a problem. I used to run 3-5 miles every day before I got pregnant.. Really wanted to continue during my pregnancy, but I had early bleeding and wanted to play it safe.
I know tons of women who ran throughout their pregnancies! Even into their 3rd trimester.
Good luck and congrats!! :D

@MamaMoose: I heard that too, and I was using the heart rate monitor on the machine at the gym...it must have been wrong though, because I was barely breaking a sweat and my heart rate was like 160+!

So definitely invest in a personal heart rate monitor if you're going to use one.

Ditto to everyone else - and if you're super worried about the jarring and have access to a gym, my OB recommended the elliptical. It's a smoother movement, and I'm still doing it at nearly 39 weeks.

The jarring is not the issue early, it's your body temp and heart rate. If you're not pushing yourself too hard and are listening to your body, you should be ok.

Well I've felt so sick and tired that I have been terrible about keep up with exercise since getting preggers. But my doc said as long as you aren't doing more than what your body is used to then it's fine. A good thing to do would be to buy a heart monitor. They say you shouldn't let you heart rate get over 140 for an extended period of time.

I did stop running (used to run about 2-3 miles 2-3 times a week, so by no means a hard core runner)...at first, I slowed down because I was tired and feeling lazy, but now, at 16 weeks, my belly feels like it's shaking uncomfortably when I run. They do sell support bands, I think, that you can use. But I've stuck to brisk walking and like 5 minutes of jogging. I wouldn't worry about the jarring, unless you're spotting or something like that. As long as you don't start a new workout routine that your body isn't used to, I think you'll be fine. I would maybe try to draw out the program over a longer period of time? If you're really worried about it, call your doctor--that's what they're there for :)

No advice, but I wanted to point you to this blog I read - she is a mom of 8 (soon to be 9) and she's been running all the way through all of her pregnancies. Definitely a motivator! http://randomthoughtsfromthezoo.blogspot.com/

If you've been working out prior to getting pregnant, you can continue to do so no problem.

It's when you didn't before but want to start while pregnant... it might be more of an issue. If you are worried, talk to a doc, but i've always been told it was okay.

As long as you don't do it to lose weight. but rather stay fit!

I started the Couch to 5K program 4 weeks ago. We just found out we're pregnant. I had been relatively active before starting the training program (I walk over a mile a day), but I'm worried about the jarring with running. Did you keep running or change your exercise routine when pregnant?
