@Pirouette: yep, it goes down your back then down each leg, so hips are common areas for the sciatic nerve to act up. With therapy and certain stretches you can improve it for sure!! Hope the doc helps!

@kjpugs: I didn't realize sciatic nerve pain was in the hip, i wonder if that's what it is! I'm seeing my doc a week from today and will definitely talk to her about it and see what she recommends.

I was a runner prior to pregnancy (but my sickness stopped me in my tracks :( ) But at around 13 weeks is when my sciatic nerve pain started up. BAD. I go to a chiro now to manage it, but it's usually in my right hip or lower back, depending on my activity. You may talk to your OB or a chiro if you are comfortable with that. My chiro has me doing exercises along with adjustments, and they're really helpful in keeping me loose and in less pain.

@Pirouette: I just used my husband's old cloth back brace, it wasn't anything fancy, just had a velcro closure.

I went through periods where things would seem to loosen up a bit more and be sore so I'd just take it a bit easier and then my body would seem to adjust after a week or so.

@Maysprout: is there a brace you recommend? i have inserts already, which i love. i felt the pain just as i was reaching the 1 mile mark both times (i usually do 4 miles total with a pee break at the halfway mark, haha). I stopped immediately after the second time and hit the elliptical, and felt zero pain the second i stopped. pregnancy hormones do some crazy things to our bodies!

@hilsy85: I have been mostly doing the elliptical...i just enjoy running so much more so i'm trying to keep it up a few times a week. of course, if it hurts, i'll start to enjoy the elliptical more, haha. maybe i'll try jog/walking and see if that's easier on me.

@matador84: aww, i'm sorry you had to give it up, but i totally hear you on the not worth it aspect. i haven't been having any symptoms and have been feeling pretty good, so i figure it's a nice time to get some running in! and then this morning happened. I dance ballet a few times a week, so i'm not so much worried about exercise...running just wakes me up in the morning the way nothing else can!

Relaxin is a hormone that gets kicked up a notch in pregnancy and makes your joints a bit loosey goosey. I wouldn't push it if you feel pain but if its your joints loosening then as long as you're careful you should be fine. I started wearing a cloth back brace around my belly at about 16 weeks during my first pregnancy and it did help while running. I also got some arch inserts for my shoes and that helped too.

I was a serious runner pre-preg, but started getting serious nausea around the 12 week mark. Then I had some complications and wasn't allowed to exercise. Even when my restrictions lifted, it just wasn't worth it to me...haven't been on a treadmill or running since. :-(

I hated giving up something I loved so much...maybe if your pain persists, try something lower impact like yoga or pilates?

I wasn't a serious runner pre pregnancy--ran maybe 3x a week, up to 2 miles each time. But I found that once i became pregnant and hit 12 wks or so, it was just uncomfortable for me to run. I had pain in my sides and I just felt like my belly was moving too much (even though I didn't even have a bump yet). I ended up switching to brisk walking and the elliptical. I did jog randomly throughout my pregnancy for up to 5 minutes at a time, interspersed with walking, when I felt up to it.

Hopefully someone else has advice for you!

I'm a little over 15 weeks, and not really showing yet, so i don't exactly have a belly weighing me down. I tried to run this morning (i've been running around 2-3x a week, slower than i used to), and i had some hip pain on the right side. Full disclosure, i did two workout videos this weekend that were pretty good workouts, so it could be general soreness, but it doesn't hurt at all when i'm not actively running and it stopped as soon as i stopped (and started when i tried to start again).

I've read that some experience hip pain (round ligament pain i think?) while running pregnant and that getting something to support the belly may help. but i'm just wondering if this is too early to be experiencing that since i'm not really showing yet.

I've recently noticed what i think is round ligament pain occasionally when i try to shift positions too quickly while lying down, and i think the pain is similar. Is this something I should expect to experience for the remainder of pregnancy?

I'd love to hear any runners who experienced this, and if you just stopped running completely or if it was temporary as your belly began to grow? and any tips to ease the pain would be great! I'd really like to continue running, but obviously don't want to do anything that could make things worse in the long run (no pun intended!)
