@mrscobee: My OB said about 15% of people are Rh- so we're a decent sized group. Haven't had the shots yet but I'll concur with everyone else that you get the first at 28 weeks and potentially a second after delivery.

These days it's not a big deal. The only "problem" I had was that my hospital treats the Rhogam shot like some kind of classified substance, and they made me give a blood sample before giving me the second one, even though they just took one when I checked in. And then I had to remind the nurses like 20 times that I need the shot. Grr. I was kind of scared I'd develop antibodies because they dragged their feet so much, but I've been tested since and nothing turned up.

Not a big deal UNLESS you have any bleeding. If you have bleeding before you get your shot, call your doctor right away to get one. And in future pregnancies, you need to be on the lookout for bleeding, and call in immediately if you have any.

My sister is rh- with an rh+ husband. She switched midwives for her second pregnancy. She had a ton of bleeding at 7 weeks, and they didn't bother to check her rh status. She bled for a month before they figured that out and gave her the shot. Incredibly, she did not get sensitized to the positive factor, as some women do. So just know that any bleeding means an immediate trip to the doctor for an early dose of Rhogam, and besides that, no stress.

Joining the Rh- party... it really wasn't a big deal as pps have said, though I was a little freaked out at first. I had a rhogam shot at 28 weeks, and since DS is also Rh- I never got the second shot.

Not a big deal. I got the rhogam shot at 28 weeks (nurse was terrible - it was sore for days) and both of my girls were rh positive so I got another shot the day after delivery. That one I didn't even feel!

I am rh- and my husband is rh+. I felt nervous about that when I found out and looked into rh disease but it's been a non issue. I don't consider it to be a high risk. I got the rhogam shot at 8 weeks (extra precaution due to prior miscarriage) and 28 weeks and I'll get it again after delivering.

I'm O neg, and had a shot at 28 weeks and then another after the birth. I also had one after my D&C 6 weeks ago. I actually found that the shots made me feel a bit sore and I felt a bit out of sorts sickly afterwards. My daughter is O pos, so hopefully it worked.

@Leialou: I am new to this, but most people say you get one at 28 weeks that covers you until birth, and then one at birth if your LO is RH+. Or, you get one if and when you bleed, within a day or two, as there is a chance when that occurs that you and your baby may have shared blood, which is what could potentially cause problems.

Agree with everyone else, it's not a big deal at all. @rachiecakes: Yeah at my practice they didn't even ask me if DH was positive or negative (or offer to test him) for that reason - who knows who the father is! I probably would have protested if DH were also negative, but I knew he was positive so I went ahead and got the shot. FWIW it was totally painless for me, I didn't even have any soreness afterward.

So not a big deal, especially with your first. They say the risk is more with your second child, ect. My office doe the shot regardless of DH's blood type, so I've had it with both my pregnancy, and then once baby is born if she is positive I'll have another one in the hospital.

I didn't know my husband was RH-Positive until my first son was born and he was RH-Positive. They don't test husbands in my practice on the off-chance the baby isn't theirs!! Plus getting the rhogam shot and not needing it is not an issue.
