@JoyfulKiwi: thanks! That's a good way of explaining it to DD. And yeah, in the letter they said it was just to get a general idea of what the kids already know. So the teachers can be better prepared.

@matador84: it sounds like from the letter it will be more of a casual Q&A format. Thanks!

@regberadaisy: no personal experience with this exact situation, but I used to do screening assessments at kindergarten registration time. They were quick, covering areas that @matador84: mentioned, and we'd use them to guide our starting points for each kid at the beginning of the year. Other grade levels have the past year's assessments to help them, so these little assessments helped us, especially when kids come into Pre-K or K with such a wide range of abilities.
As for being prepared, I'd suggest just telling your daughter that a teacher will sit with her and ask her to show off all the things she's been learning in daycare. Tell her it's okay if she doesn't know an answer, because she'll get to learn it in U-PreK!

I have heard of this before. Some schools might administer a ready to read assessment. It might evaluate things like can they hold a book the correct way, do they have print knowledge, can they identify which on a page is a word that starts with "__", etc.

Or it could be something more like questions about shapes, colors, number and letter identification. I think it is great that you are going to a school where they do a screener to those who are entering!

I *finally* got our U-PreK registration packet in the mail today. I found out that they do a 30 minute assessment during our registration appointment. I was surprised to read this. I was expecting the registration to be just the parents. I definitely wasn't expecting a assessment till she enters kindergarten.

If your LO went to a public PreK, did they do some kind of assessment ?
What should I expect? I definitely will NOT be prepping DD in any way shape or form. I just don't think it's necessary. But I would like some idea of what to expect so we can be prepared and I can explain to her what will happen.

Thanks!
