Weeks of pre-labor. I had real contractions throughout the third trimester. Got them every 10-15 mins in the weeks leading up to my labor at 38 weeks (a medical induction) and was only 2 cm when I was induced! It totally sucks.

Sounds corny, but you'll know when it's labor. The pre-labor for me was spaced out...when real labor set in during my induction I was in crazy pain during the contractions and they came on every 5 mins or less.

It lasted for 4 weeks, and I felt like I was going to lose my damn mind. They weren't BH, they were timeable and then not. But I will say when the real deal hit, they changed a bit, to be more like period cramps of the worst sort. I went to L&D multiple times because I thought it was the real deal. The last time, I could have sworn it was the real deal, and it wasn't. I broke down crying because I was frustrated.

The upside is that when they started and wouldn't stop, after I lost my mucous plug, I showed up at the hospital 6 cm dialated. So at least they did something!

Hang in there, Mama. It's the worst.

Very similar to @yoursilverlining, I had timeable, moderately painful contractions on and off for 3 weeks. Sometimes as close as 5 minutes apart for 30 minutes. Didn't lose the mucus plug.

Didn't have the baby (#2) until 40+6 and "real" labor lasted 3 hours. I called the midwife 2 hours in despite feeling like I didn't need to go to the hospital yet and she told me to come in immediately since it was my second baby. I was ready to give birth basically when I arrived (although my water hadn't broken), but we waited briefly to get a round of antibiotics and for the midwife to get some coffee :)

They were not anything like Braxton hicks - they were timetable and painful and were on an off for weeks. I never lost my mucus plug, was about 3cm dilated by 37 weeks when preterm contractions started.

@Mrs. Champagne: That's what I keep telling myself, "I will know when it's the real deal"

@Alba4: Not quiet to the 5-1-1. I started to time them last night because they kept waking me up and they were 4-7 mins apart lasting 45 seconds - 1 minute. But they weren't super painful so I decided to stop & try to rest. Plus I have not lost my mucus plug (that I'm aware of) and isn't that a sign of dilation?! I'm still having contractions this morning but I haven't started to time them yet. Again they still aren't painful, just uncomfortable. Everywhere I read says this could go on for weeks. Eh. I was a little excited because I thought it may be the start of the real deal.

@Pollywog: Wow after your water broke your little guy did not waste any time.. I wish my water would break just so I would know. Thanks for sharing. :))

I lost my mucus plug on Sunday and then pieces all week. I started getting contractions at 1pm on Friday that would come and go. They got stronger, but not regular around 11. Stopped at midnight. 1am my water broke. 130 contractions were intense, but random. 3am he was here.

@MMcAlli: First off.... Eeek! You definitely shouldn't go during pre-labor, but it can't hurt to put a call into your Dr. Are your contractions in the 5-1-1 pattern?

I had a membrane sweep at 38 weeks which sort of set things off. I was crampy and started to lose parts of my mucus plug. That night/early morning contractions started to pick up, but nothing was consistent. I started timing them throughout the day. I emptied out my stomach all day (multiple poops, sorry) and sat on my big exercise ball. Real contractions and labor picked up @ 9 PM after a shower. I could time them and they were close to 5-1-1. Once I started puking too, I knew it was the real thing. I had trouble speaking through contractions... Instead I had to really focus on my breathing. The dr office and doula told me to come in the morning, but around midnight or 1AM I just had a gut feeling to go into the hospital. Glad I did. Was admitted @2AM (4CM dialated) and delivered by 6:55 AM!

My doula had recommended taking a walk, shower, or rest during prelabor. Good luck!

With my son, I felt crampy (not timeable... More constant) from about Wednesday to Saturday. Woke up ok Sunday morning at 4am with real contractions. Had him that day. You'll know when they are real!

Did you experience "Prelabor" if so how long did it last? Days? Weeks? Also, what was it like for you? Did it feel like braxton hicks but a little stronger? Did you lose your plug beforehand? Did the contractions start off light and get a lot stronger before you decided to go to L&D?
I think I am experiencing PreLabor and I'm not sure when to consider it to be the real deal. I know only time will tell but it eases my anxiety reading others experience. I don't want to go to the L&D just to be sent home but then again I don't want to be so far along when I finally decide to go to L&D.
