Thanks all. I found a place that will do prenatal massage during first trimester and my doc also said it was okay. I'm assuming most places won't do it bc of liability reasons and maybe because they don't have trained prenatal therapist. @MrsScottish: I honestly don't know if there is a huge difference between prenatal and regular massage, especially during first trimester (other than avoiding the belly). I'm just looking forward to alleviating some shoulder (work) and lower back (pregnancy) tension/soreness. I feel okay doing a Swedish massage but would stay away from deep tissue or anything to rough (like Thai).

I'm a massage therapist. I have had 3 since finding out I'm pregnant and am 11.5 weeks. Just let your therapist know and he or she will adjust the massage. There's a few spots we try to. Avoid. Using deeper pressure on....

What is the difference between a normal massage and pre-natal massage?
I asked my massage therapist, who I see once a month, about massages, as we are TTC. She said that it is still fine, just to let her know. There is no "Off limit zones except the stomach" but that she would adjust the table to accommodate my stomach.

Places I went always made a point to say they wouldn't in the first trimester. My midwives were less concerned but I was not about to risk it. If anything had happened I Wouk always wonder even if it was totally unrelated.

Wow it never even occurred to me that a massage would be off limits! I guess I technically did, although it was 12w6d so last day of my 1st trimester. I told the masseuse I was pregnant and she modified the massage accordingly. It was definitely more of a "gentle relaxing" massage than others I've had that were more "dig in there and work the kinks out" type.

The spa I go to won't do prenatal massages until the 2nd trimester. I went in 2nd tri and it was amazing! :)

I'd really love one right now, but most of the places I've looked at say they won't do prenatal massage before 2nd trimester so I'm holding off until then. I'm guessing it's for liability reasons but also because very few places have a masseuse trained in prenatal massage.

I had two basically right after I was into the 2nd trimester (anniversary mini trip) and they kept asking me at the spa if I was sure I wasn't still in the 1st tri. I don't know that they can cause anything bad to happen, but they wouldn't have been comfortable performing them.

I had one while on vacation when I was about 10 weeks along. The spa was totally fine with it. My understanding is that some places won't do it because they're scared of being blamed if a m/c does occur, since they're statistically more likely early on, but that there's nothing inherently dangerous about actually getting the massage. I'm definitely not an expert, though!

Has anyone gotten a massage during the first trimester? I've heard mixed things from Dr Google. I know my best bet is to call my doctor and my massage therapist and ask them, but I just wanted to do a little preliminary research.
