@Smurfette: Yeah, DH is the one who is like, just do them all! I haven't even talked to our insurance about what things cost actually-- probably not smart.

@Foodnerd81: Could have been but I know it was for 4 different ones. I think she said one is mostly for people with a Jewish background, we aren't but it was just do all 4 or none. DH wanted to go ahead and do them since it is was only $25. He has been freaked out something was going to be wrong.

Thanks everyone! OK so maybe it's only the spina bifida one (at 16 weeks) left and that's it. It seemed like so many options since they gave me paperwork for every single option.

@Smurfette: Maybe your earlier one was to test if you are a carrier for cystic fibrosis? They did that with all the other bloodwork for my first appt, but I'd think that they only need to ever do once.

We did some genetic testing, but I can't remember what it was. It was an extra thing, nothing standard, but the office has a deal with the lab we only pay $25 regardless of what insurance pays. We won't have to do it again when pregnant with #2. Then we just did the NT scan and the at 15 weeks (I think) they did another blood test for spina bifidia. That was all my doctor's office does. At least that I am aware of them testing but in the beginning they took so much blood, who knows what all they were testing.

@Mrsbells: Yeah they were asking about the spina bifida one-- wasn't sure if that was one people usually get done, but sounds like yes?

Baby center has a simple break down of the testing. Did you have any other test in mind other than the NT? most people only do that and the spina bifida blood work. and Gestational diabetes too

Is there some good resource spelling out what the options are for prenatal testing? I feel like I get a little confused over what the options are at every appointment, and the midwives never actually really recommend anything, they just tell me my options (which I promptly forget when I leave). I realize they are just doing their job and giving me options and probably could be sued if they advise against something and then something is wrong, but I just want to know what is reasonable.

I'll be 32 when I deliver and have no reason to think anything would be wrong, so I just want the basics but I am kind of confused as to what that is. I feel like the more tests I get done, the more chance of getting results that will needlessly cause worry, though of course it's nice to get an all clear. We just had the NT scan and will get the blood results back next week.

Any websites that are helpful and not overly technical or alarmist?
