I did prenatal yoga a little bit, but much preferred an amazing pre-natal pilates class at my gym. It's good to do whatever you can though when you're pregnant, cuz babies require A LOT of strength! They get heavy so quickly!! (and being fit through pregnancy is rumored to help with labor...)

I did prenatal yoga from around 10 weeks to 20 weeks and I enjoyed it. I especially liked the hip opening poses and some poses really helped with my back pain.

@hergreenapples: I am actually really lucky in this sense. I've been going to the same training facility for about a year now (my trainer specializes in scoliosis) and he recently opened up a new studio for group classes. He recommended that I try the prenatal yoga and said that I could drop in on a class for free. After that, I would have to sign up for the series.

I appreciate the tips on the videos though!

I signed up for a class for the reasons @Foodnerd81 mentions. I need direction! I have no idea what I'm doing yet :)

@hergreenapples: OOH! I didn't realize you have to do a series, I thought it would just be drop in, like most regular yoga classes I've done. I take it back, doing a video would make a lot of sense before signing up for 6 weeks or something.

@Foodnerd81: I suppose that argument could be made, but in a beginner class, particularly a prenatal class, there would not be anything overly complex or likely to cause injury. I was merely thinking that if OP is unsure about signing about for a class (as I know that many prenatal yoga classes can't be done on a drop-in basis, but require a long term time and financial commitment) that it might be helpful to watch a video - even if she doesn't do the poses - to get a sense of whether or not yoga is for her.

@hergreenapples: I would think if you are just starting yoga, it would be more important to do it in a class so the instructor watches to make sure you are doing poses right. Especially while pregnant, when you joints get all crazy flexible, I would think you could hurt yourself by doing poses wrong. Of course, this is coming from someone whose sister is a prenatal yoga instructor, so I'm biased. If you already did yoga, you would know better how to do the poses and just modify them.
I've never been pregnant, so never done prenatal yoga, but I plan to.

I love it. I have a really good teacher which makes a big difference I think, part of it is more traditional poses and other parts are more meditation oriented.

I did a class at5 weeks. Not sure I reaped any physical benefits since I was so early, but I did like that 10 minutes at the beginning of the class was set aside for sharing about what ails you and what's happy in your pregnancy that week. Seemed like a real community.

I've been practicing yoga for the past 9 years, so it isn't new to me, but I have modified my practice since getting pregnant. I've just been practicing at home with some more advance prenatal yoga that I got from yogadownload.com. They have more beginner-geared options as well. It might be worth downloading one of their videos and giving it a try before committing to a class :)
