What about just getting him a regular old hat? It will at least keep it covered.

Also, if he can't look in a mirror and it's not particularly itchy or sore, be may not even know it's there! They aren't terribly self-aware at that age.

Wishing him well!

Thanks guys!

I guess that's true, he probably will be more subdued than usual for the first oouple of days at least.

@Mamamoose, you're definitely not a terrible person bc we've tried benadryl with him before. Unfortunately it just riles him up and gets him hyper and angry!

I would just watch him REALLY closely. And try to explain to him that he has a hurt spot on his head that he needs to be really careful to not touch. I am guessing that he will probably be pretty laid back for the first day, or maybe even two, and will probably be able to feel the spot on his head (which might night feel good), so he will just know not to hurt it more.

I don't have a little one yet so I'm not much help. Am I terrible person if I suggest baby benedryl to keep him somewhat subdued for the first couple of days after surgery?! I hope everything goes well with his surgery and he gets better quickly!

My 16-month-old son will be having surgery at the end of the month. It's a minor procedure but he will have to be under general anesthesia. The incision will be on the side of his head and he's a super super active toddler, so I'm most concerned about him re-injuring himself while recovering. In the worst case scenario the surgeron said we could put his arms into splints so he can't injure himself, but that sounds so sad to me. I'm trying to think of alternatives....maybe a protective helmet or a cone like a dog wears after surgery?? Anyway just wanted to see if anyone has experience or advice about taking care of a little one after surgery - what should I be prepared for?
