I use rockin green and have a top load washer too. I never boiled my prefolds, I just washed them 5 times with the rockin green. I bought the RG on cotton babies.com in bulk when they were having a sale, so I have enough for years!

I second the start as you mean to go on comment above. That being said, I'd look into your type of water - hard, soft, neutral, and then choose a detergent from there. We use RnG hard rock for slightly hard water. It's worked well for us for a year and I've stripped once. I prepped in a CD detergent.

OH! And one more thing - it might not apply to less expensive diaps like you've chosen - but only prep a couple so you can try them out. That way if they don't work for you, you can return/exchange for another style. Gosh do I wish I'd taken that advice!

Yay! I love GMD! First off, you don't need to boil them. Actually, GMD recommends not doing that. You can do 4-5 wash/dry cycles with the detergent in the first cycle to prep. Even though with that many cycles there wouldn't be any detergent residue left at the end, I would still start with whatever CD detergent you're going to use to wash regularly... "start as you mean to go on" and all that.

I'm supposed to get my big delivery with all my prefolds from Green Mountain Diapers today (Yay!) and want to start prepping them this weekend.

After boiling, can I just use our regular detergent (7th Gen. unscented liquid) for the two wash / dry cycles?

Bonus question - is it worth getting rockin' green or some other "diaper specific" detergent? We're doing prefolds & have a top load machine, if that matters at all.
