@agold: I'd rather have a serving tray than individual packages to open. But it could just be me.

FYI guys Aldi sells individual packages of nut free cookies now!

As a parent of a kid who wouldn't be able to eat anything homemade/from a bakery due to allergies/cross-contamination risk, I'm a huge fan of either bringing in something packaged that's clearly labeled - so teachers can assess if it's safe - or fruit. I would recommend asking the teacher if there are any allergies, and if so it would be awesome to accommodate them...

@agold: Haha, it's actually a little bit annoying since my kid is in an only-eating-peanut-butter-and-jelly phase, but I'm sure it's amazing for kids with tree nut allergies! Almost everyone brings in Oreos or store bought rice krispie treats though, so birthdays are easy. It's a good list to keep in mind if any of the kids in her class have nut allergies though!

@raspberries: wow. a nut-free school zone must be pretty awesome. the preschool my girl is at is just a little local church, been around forever and its the same preschool I went to. I wasn't given any restrictions.

Our school is nut-free due to allergies, so they send home a list of treats you can bring for birthdays - they don't accept home made goods and must be labeled nut-free

Would be fine! With me anyway! We don't go crazy with sweets at home so I usually don't mind if they get special treats at school for birthdays. During the preschool/pre-k years for my older DD, I've always done pizza and mini cupcakes.

@MrsSRS: Thank you for your comment! I do now remember that when I asked the teacher about this on the phone, she mentioned cookies more than once. :silly: So cookies it is! I hate a mess and crumbs, so I get it. Donut holes create crumbs galore! So I will do cookies and maybe wrap them in little bags. Or do you think that would create trash that teacher would need to pick up off the floor?

My kid’s preschool only allowed store-bought treats and specifically preferred popsicles, especially the healthy versions made with real fruit. Does your DD’s school have a freezer? Trader Joe’s has a couple good options if you have one nearby.

I usually send sugar cookies (in shape of the bday number) with colored sugar added before baking. Fun for them to help with! That of course assumes they accept homemade which is not true everywhere due to allergies (our preschool does but elementary doesn’t).

I did once bring an additional non-food treat. She got super sick for her 4th bday party and we decided not to reschedule, so I brought the treat bags to school with teacher permission. The classmates had been invited to the party so it seemed ok to me but I wouldn’t do it regularly.

Our preschool when he was really little allowed bday treats. We did rice crispy treats. You can decorate them with sprinkles too you just have to do it as soon as you spread them in a pan.
You can also make them her fave color by adding food coloring to the melted marshmallow/butter mixture.

I would agree that donut holes or cookies are the way to go, or mini muffins. We did mini muffins for E's birthday last year. I will likely do donut holes this year.

We aren't able to bring food for birthday celebrations at our preschool, so kids have done balsa wood airplanes, little play doh tubs, bubbles, pencils and stickers, sand buckets and shovels, mini erasers...fun little things like that. Just in case you're looking for non-food ideas!

I brought a cookie cake (cut) and it was a hit for my kids. When I taught preschool wins ago, every single mom brought cupcakes. And most kids ended up throwing it away.

Last year DD took cupcakes in on her birthday. There were 10 kids in her class last year, 7 of them had birthdays during the school year. 4 kids brought cupcakes, 1 brought donuts, 1 brought brownies, and 1 brought cookies. Our teachers just prefer that you bring things that are already portioned out, they don't want to cut a cake or anything.

DS looooves donuts so when it was his turn to bring in a birthday treat we brought munchkins from Dunkin. He never received any bday toys from any of his classmate's birthdays so if you do that I would maybe just clear it with the teacher?

Eek! My big baby is starting preschool next week. Her birthday is the week after that and I have the option of bringing a treat or something for her to share with her 12 classmates. What would you send? Mini cupcakes? A little toy? Something else? Would a cupcake and small toy be okay?
