@looch: Yes, I agree. I am big proponent of "vote with your feet". I wish people were more thoughtful consumers more generally!

It sounds like she wanted the teacher to work for free in the mornings? I'd consider switching schools and be hesitant to let my younger kids go there if the director was relying on people working for free and firing quality for cheapness.
I don't care about the business workings I care about the product, which is a safe environment that nurtures learning. I'd def be questioning whether the school is the right fit but I'd talk to the director first to try and hear her side.

@ElbieKay: You're right, I didn't think about it from a client perspective.

When our daycare/preschool had the drama, the admin made the decision and that was that. They weren't interested in what the parents had to say, which spoke volumes to me and I then pulled my son from the preschool program that we'd registered for. I think that's how parents "vote" in this regard.

@T.H.O.U.: @looch: I agree with you.

Besides voicing to the director that without this key employee you plan to switch daycares there isn't anything I think the parents should/ can do. If it's just a money thing parents can pay more with the director's blessing and the additional funds go to the teacher. However, it sounds like it's not just a money issue

I think its fair for parents to request and provide feedback about all teachers making good money and getting raises. However, to specifically work to "get a teacher back" isn't your place.

@looch: I sort of disagree. In the corporate world, a mediocre employee with great client relationships would probably have more pull in the organization than this teacher does. This is not an issue of colleagues protesting; it's the clients.

This is a tough situation. I agree with the options that @JoyfulKiwi laid out. We've had similar things happen at our daycare over the past few years (teachers and even a director being fired or leaving over issues with admin). In our case, we (and other parents) called a meeting with the owners and told them we thought the situation was handled poorly. I also reached out to a couple of the people who left. One of them ended up becoming a babysitter for us, and the other is thinking of starting a new preschool so I told her to let us know if/when it got started. My LO is still in the toddler room, but some of the families of older children have left our daycare when their kids were ready to transition to the preschool level. The admin issues weren't the main reason they left, but I know it was part of it. We have considered leaving a few times but we still like the current teachers enough to stay.

There was another situation where some infant room teachers left (my LO was not affected) and a couple families ended up leaving the daycare and hiring one of the teachers as a nanny.

We had major drama when my son was in daycare, it got to the point where people were writing these really dramatic emails, requesting meetings with the director and the principal of the upper school, etc. It isn't that I disagreed with the parents, but I didn't feel it was our place to get in the middle, if you will. The decisions come down from the top, just like they do in a work environment, so I didn't understand what the parents thought they could do. Think about it, when a work collegue loses their job, people don't start emailing the CEO asking them to be reinstated.

So it would be possible for her to serve as the "babysitter/teacher" for some of the kids out of someones home? If so she could probably even make more money that way and you could keep her.

I teach preschool and in this situation I'd be touched that so many parents cared for me, but I'd ultimately not be able to return to a workplace/director who obviously did NOT care about me. I think if you & the other parents want to support the lead teacher, you can 1) reach out to tell her how much you appreciate her & see if she needs letters of recommendation/references for a new position; 2) formally let your displeasure with the situation to the Director; 3) look for a new preschool if you feel that's right for your child and make sure the director knows why you're leaving & that you will not be able to recommend her school to others.

Unfortunately, this is fairly common in early childhood education (no pay raises, pay cuts, hours being cut, etc) and there's not much teachers can do about it. Parents hold the cards because they're the ones paying tuition.

Wow, that's crazy! Unfortunately, the problem here seems to be the director. If I were the lead teacher, I'm not sure I'd be willing to face further abuse from that person, just to finish out the year, even with so much parental support. It sounds like HER best option is to find another job asap. As for the parents, I'm not sure there's really much left to do at this point except leave if you're really unhappy, or finish out the year and then reassess.

Background: Yesterday, seemingly out of nowhere, we get a letter that “Lead Teacher” has left the school for personal reasons. Today, the parents on our group chat found out that the Director had cut her pay and wanted her coming in a half hour later. She kept coming in early for a while because 3 kids were there at that time but wasn't being paid for it. When she stopped coming in early, the director yelled at her about why she wasn't there. She hasn't been given a raise in 15 years (Omg) and is the primary breadwinner for her family. So basically this was the straw that broke the camel's back and she felt she was not being appreciated and had to resign.

The parents are all in a group chat about how to get Lead Teacher back. She is beyond wonderful and obviously this is hard on everyone- kids and parents. Most WOH and are worried about childcare but also this particular teacher is why many are at this school in the first place. They wanted a meeting with the Director. When a mom called to set it up, Director told her that of course she wanted Lead Teacher back but she would need to talk to her directly. Well the parents convinced Lead Teacher to agree to finish out the school year with our kids and call the director. Director then was supposedly pretty mean and told her she had already found a cheaper teacher to take over. So here we are.

The whole drama is pretty nuts on so many levels to me. Ultimately the best case scenario would be to get Lead Teacher reinstated but everyone is so shocked that they are just throwing out suggestions ( a petition, a walk out, leaving and having lead teacher serve as babysitter) and nobody has a plan. So bees, any ideas?
