I originally chose the center again but at the last second chose to move her to the elementary school! I know this post is old now but thanks everyone for your input :)

if its just one preschool to another, i'd probably just keep her in her current one. i think a year will be super helpful in maturing and hopefully the transition will be easier once they understand more. i have the same decision to make next year, altho its for public T-K vs preschool, but i will probably switch her bc we'd be saving $12k+, which is huge. i'm just hoping in this next year dd will mature a bit more and hopefully the transition won't be painful.

Is she done with naps and/or will the pre-K program offer a rest time? I know that when kiddos start kinder, they are really tired because of transitioning to all day school, so if your kid was one who still needed a little rest and a break during the day, perhaps the center would be better for another year? On the flip side, if she's done with naps, perhaps easing her into all-day school now AND going through the tough transition a little earlier would mean kinder will be an easier move.

One year makes a huge difference though, she might not be ready to make transitions now, but another year could be a different story entirely.

I'd wait to move her.

I would transition her sooner. I feel like Kindergarten is such a huge transition - riding the bus, sitting a desk for long periods, bigger class sizes, etc. I feel like if you can ease the transition by starting off doing preschool in the same place, it may seem less scary to her.

I can tell you that we are in a full day PreK (4) in an elementary school all day long and it's been amazing. It was a bit scary for me from the start but I have zero regrets. That being said I have a kiddo that's pretty outgoing and confident. The entire school administration is amazing to these 4 year olds. Based on my experience I'd move her.

Is the only option at the elementary full day?

@Ree723: yes very difficult transition! @T.H.O.U.: she's at the center now, could go again next year (what I'm debating, where) then she starts K! So this coming year is her last year of PK. @oliviaoblivia: that's a good point!

I'd stay with the center.
If she transitions with her classmates next year that'll help the kindergarten transition. And if your littlest will be eventually going to the center, watching her big sis go everyday will help her transition.

I think having 1 year at the elementary campus is a great idea before starting K if you can do it. However, the idea of doing 2 years at a larger preschool may not be worth it. Can you stay at the center this year and move to the preschool next year?

@Bao: If I recall correctly, I think your DD has had a bit of a difficult transition to school. For that reason alone, I'd keep her at the centre next year. Yes, she'll have to transition to the school eventually, but she'll be older then, more used to mummy leaving and coming back, and just all around more mature and better equipped to handle big changes. I'm also assuming towards the end of the four year old program at the centre, they'll do visits to the school to help ease the transition etc. I would definitely stick with the centre!

@bao: yeah, totally get that. i'd probably just keep her at the smaller center then since consistency is probably more important when they are younger than at 5ish? But you know your kids best :)

@KayKay: I don't think I'd do full day only because I stay home so there isn't really a need...although in theory it sounds great.

For your DD1 I would move her to the elementary for Prek so she has an extra year to ease into the school. So that she's good and ready when she starts K.

If cost is not a factor, i would without a doubt stay at the center.

I'm faced with a similar decision, but it'll cost me 15K to stay at the center! So, most likely LO will be at the elementary school program next year.

I think it depends on your kiddo, really. If she's in a good place with handling transitions, I'd move her to the larger school now so that the K transition isn't as dramatic. If there are a lot of other things going on and comfort is more important, then keep her where she is. It seems pretty neutral in terms of win/loss between the locations, so I'd go off the transition component more than anything else.

LO had registration last night, and we found out she has a couple of options. She is currently in the 3's program in a small childcare like center, but it's still part of the school district. Next year she has the option to stay in that same building and just move classes, or move up to the elementary school for the 4 year preschool there. That preschool is literally up the hill behind the childcare center. The programs are identical, so no real difference except teachers and location.

My original thought was the keep her at the childcare center because that's what she knows, and I like that it's smaller, so less overwhelming. On the flip side, the other school is where she will go to K in two years, so she could get used to it. I think the program in the elementary school offers full day preschool, as well. Any other thoughts for me?
