We have always hosted my son's birthday parties at home in our apartment. His fourth birthday party is this Sunday. We do it that way because we can provide more adult friendly food and conversation (and seating!). We find it more pleasant than trying to make small talk at a bounce house.

Last year and this year, we basically just plan on a big play date with 6-8 kids plus their associated adults. We serve brunch food and decorate with lots of helium balloons and a happy birthday banner. And then we get a schmancy cake from a bakery. Last year my son eventually insisted on opening his presents at the party. Since there were only five other kids there I allowed it even though it would not have been my preference.

For his first and second birthdays, we hired a music guy to come perform for the first half of the party.

We just went to one in January. It was really nice BUT be prepared for your home to be wrecked. She had cake/cupcake/icing ground into her rug. Juice spilled everywhere. Etc. I am overly cautious about that stuff when in someone else’s home, but I noticed that majority of parents didn’t pay much attention and let their 1-4yos wander freely with all of the above. It had me and my ocd on edge 😬😂

yes, we went to one. but she had a really nice yard and had her older kids (like middle school students) run games and activities outside. the moms kind of milled around and talked.

Edit, the party host invited just the girls in her class. so maybe that's why it wasn't too bad and not that many kids or parents. If it was the whole class, it might be a different story.

We've had a couple parties at our house for DS and we've been to a couple at someone's house. The kids always have a blast but it is kind of awkward for the parents. None of us really knew each other.

Do you have a yard? If it is nice enough the kids could run around outside.

We have been to about a zillion parties at this one bounce house place and one party at someone's home. And I can't put my finger on why this would be but the one party at the person's home was super awkward for the parents. The kids had fun though.

We had my son's third birthday at our house (he was dead-set on a party at home with a bounce house despite several alternate suggestions) and we invited his preschool classmates. I think 5 of them ended up attending (about half the class) and 2-3 others couldn't because of conflicts (wedding, etc). In our circle it seems to be a pretty even split between parties at home vs. a venue!

To me, it's no different than going to a bridal or baby shower at someone's house I have never been to. I would, of course, stay for the party. Could you possibly have it at an indoor play place or something if you prefer not to host?

@mrsbubbletea: @JMOM: I suggested that idea too about an alternate location but my husband said that might be confusing, so you guys suggesting it too makes me wonder if I should just do that. Thanks!

We've had parties at home and invited preschool/daycare friends.

And yes, we would go to a party at their house even if we had never been there before. In fact we are going to one next weekend.

I wouldn't be bothered by a preschool party at someone's house. We did that last year for my son's 5th birthday. In a class of around 25, we had 12 guests and at least 3 or 4 of those were friends who didn't go to preschool but we just wanted to invite. I did hire a Jedi and Princess Leia to come, they did all the activities and games and I just did the food and prizes. It's much more demanding when you are running the activities AND food AND games. There were 3 or 4 parents that stayed so they helped. I really do recommend hiring princesses/characters if that is in your budget, the kids love it and it's less work for you in the long run. Although, I love Becky's idea of having the park being your primary party place but your home as the backup in case of bad weather.

At that age parents usually stay, so I can’t think of a reason not to attend the party because the house is “new”.

I was surprised by the number of parties hosted away from homes to be honest. Maybe it’s because in preschool the class sizes are larger and kids are potentially more destructive than if why were older? The location wouldn’t make a difference to me. I personally appreciate when the party isn’t at a special location because then my kids can’t ask me to shell out a bunch of money to have their party there!

We had a super casual play date style birthday party for my son’s 3yo bday party. My house is tiny tiny. It was literally just the kids playing with my son’s toys and then having ice cream sundaes. And I had snacky type stuff and beer and wine for parents. I thought it was fun If not a bit hectic! Could you plan it for park and put alternate location as your house?

Hello! My daughter has a birthday party coming up and is dead set on invting her preschool friends and having a piñata. I would love to have her birthday at a local park but the weather is really unpredictable this time of year. Would you go to a party of a clas mate’s at their house, if you haven’t gone to their house before? I don’t know what birthday party etiquette is. Thanks!
