Our school is nut-free, so they have:
- soybutter and jelly roll-ups
- mini muffins (packaged)
- Goldfish
- applesauce
- cheesesticks

Everything has to be prepackaged, nothing can be home made.

@PinkElephant: I think they'll be fine! Someone I know also did them with juice boxes and yogurts. I think there are many things you could do this with.

ETA: all you need is gauze (the kind that sticks/grips to itself), a sharpie and googley eyes. Seriously took me like 5 mins to do 12 of them and even the teachers were gushing over them.

@SweetiePie: I.LOVE.THOSE! Might have to do this for DD's class (although I think we have to use the Motts unsweetened ones to stay w/in the sugar content limits, and the round yellow caps aren't nearly as Frankenstein-ish on those. grrrr... :)

@PinkElephant: good idea to make things cute for Halloween. Maybe I can do cuties with jack o lantern faces (I have a food marker).
I made these apple sauce pouches for my son's class last year - so easy and got so many compliments.

@jedeve: @Adira: just heard back. No allergies at all! Just have to follow nut policy for whole school.

She also clarified that they like variety so I'll prob send 3 things per week and let them distribute how they see fit. Probably 1 crackery/carb thing, one dairy that is easily stored all week (yogurt/cheese sticks) and one fruit or veggie that's durable or just bring something fresh every day, which is relatively easy since I do drop off and I sah.
They don't care about packaging (bulk vs individual) and I can cut fruit at home or they can do it for me.

Thanks all for helping me think through this. I know it's not that hard. I'm just a rule follower and a people pleaser so I want to do it right and do it well.

@SweetiePie: Just ask at school. Our preschool had no problem with us bringing in fruit/cheese cut at home, cute seasonal homemade snack mixes (as long as they were nut-free); kindergarten requires that EVERYTHING be pre-packaged and opened in the classroom.

In the past I've just tried to make things cute - ie jack-o-lantern faces drawn on mandarin orange cups (or mandarin oranges!) but basic.

The kids at my son's preschool went nuts for mild salsa...I think they might have served it with either wheat crackers or tortilla chips.

I also saw popcorners and graham crackers on rotation.

We bring in snack for 12 kids for a week, each semester. We have a strict no-nut policy. Also, toddlers aren't allowed to have carrot sticks (or baby carrots), popcorn, or pretzels, and grapes must be cut in 1/4.

Because of the nut policy, parents aren't allowed to prepare anything at home - including cutting fruit. Here is the list of suggestions they gave us:

* fresh whole fruits
* cheese (string or cubes)
* applesauce
* yogurt
* rice cakes
* cheerios (with or without milk)
* mini bagels and cream cheese
* multi-grain crackers
* veggies with ranch or hummus
* raisins/craisins
* veggie straws
* pita chips/bread with hummus
* sunbutter spread

Last week, I sent:
* a big bag of snap peas and hummus
* applesauce pouches and cheese sticks
* pita chips and hummus
* yogurt, blueberries, and cheerios (DS insisted on "parfaits")

Definitely find out what (if any) allergies you have to deal with. Maybe you'll get lucky and won't have to worry about avoiding anything (besides nuts)!

Hummus contains Sesame, which is the 9th most common allergen. We discovered my son's sesame allergy when he had hummus for the first time at school - it was scary. :(

My son is allergic to nuts and dairy. In case you do have to worry about dairy allergies, here is some ideas:

Applesauce pouches
Clementines
Sunbutter and celery
Carrots and hummus
Wheat thins and hummus
Trail mix with raisins, sunflower seeds, and Cheerios, Rice Krispies.
Sliced apples and graham crackers
Veggie straws

Pretzel goldfish do contain dairy, just FYI in case anyone was suggesting those for that reason!

My son goes to a co-op playschool and we have one day a month where snack is our responsibility. It needs to be nut free, no carrots or popcorn (choking hazard) and grapes must be cut. We are allowed to bring in home-made food, too.

I plan to do sliced grapes and whole wheat mini pretzels or baked goldfish for one time and cheese sticks and mini applesauce/carrot/spinach muffins for the next. Yogurts packets and hummus and carrots/crackers are also good ideas!

Just a thought, we weren't allowed to do any nut butter substitutes (like sun butter) because they said it was too hard to tell what was pb and what wasn't and not worth the risk. They didn't have a problem with me sending hummus though (I think that's kind of a hard snack to deal with, but I sent it in lunches)

@jhd: I definitely thought about cost savings and less waste on the individual serving packs! But I went with what the teachers requested. I think this year I can do the big bags though.

@jape14: @jhd: wow never would have thought about small individual packs of things! My son LOVES pirates booty so that's a good idea.

LO just started preschool this year and parents are each assigned a day every month to bring snacks. When it was LO's turn we did yogurt tubes, goldfish and apple slices. Our school prefers larger packs over individual packs for things like the goldfish etc. So far LO was super excited about the days they had cheese and popcorn, even though he rarely eats either at home!! ;) It seems like most parents send 2 or 3 options for the day. Our list of suggestions has most of the same foods already mentioned: fruits, veggies, cheese, yogurt, graham crackers, pretzels, goldfish etc.

My go-to preschool class snack is cheese sticks and raisins. I get the bulk box of raisins from Costco (2, 2-lb bags) and send in a bag for the class. I've also sent blueberries and graham crackers. The overwhelming favorite snack in his class for the past two years has been pirate's booty! I would check with the teachers about whether they prefer single-serving packages - our school is not a fan of them (I imagine it's annoying to open that many individual packs of anything). We're also not allowed to send homemade stuff for allergy reasons.

Also, I can't believe the difference between now and when I was a kid! We literally made a giant batch of edible PEANUT BUTTER playdoh when I was in Kindergarten. That we first played with all together on a big table. Then ate. 🤢

I would stick to packaged things for allergies, although our daycare totally encourages homemade food for events.

I'd probably do something like:

- Toddler trail mix with raisins, pretzel goldfish, and Cheerios.
- Earth's Best little nutrigrain bar things
- Fruit and veg pouches
- Cuties or bananas

I feel like those are all things you can bring in and let the teachers change up every few days (minus the bananas).

My daughter goes to a coop where parents take turns bringing in snacks and they gave us a list of suggested snacks. They are a nut free school who also accommodates other allergies (like this year there is an egg allergy so we received a notice not to send hard boiled eggs even in their in their individual lunches).

I would definitely ask about other allergies. Our school does not allow homemade items (risk of cross contamination). And any cut fruit has to be cut there, using their knife and cutting board.

Generally they suggested a dry snack (goldfish, graham crackers...) and a "healthy" snack (cheese sticks, applesauce, individual yogurt cups, fruit). This seemed like a good formula on the days I stayed.

I would avoid anything messy or hard to serve and clean up. Grapes still had to be cut at my school.

My go to was usually individual snack bags of goldfish or cheese it's or teddy Graham's, and either cheese sticks or apple sauce cups, because those were my daughter's favorite. But I only had to do it every other month so I didn't care about being repetitive.

So our preschool has parents take turns bringing snacks for the whole class. Usually it's week by week but because his class is small this year (5 including him!) they are doing a whole month at a time.

Considering allergy restrictions, what are some simple preschool snack ideas for 5 kids? I'm assuming they want the same snack for a whole week, switching week to week.
Is fruit usually allowed? Cheese? Do I have to ask about specific allergies? All they told me initially is no nuts (obviously). I'd like to do a healthy mini muffin or something one week, but I'm nervous since we have no allergies at all in our house, I'm not sure to what extent I have to worry. Like is homemade even allowed? Should I just do like applesauce pouches and goldfish and call it a day? Am I overthinking this?

Oh and I volunteered for the first month. Sept 26 through all of October. Halp.

Initial thoughts were:
- cheese stick and apple wedges or grapes
- healthy muffin (if I'm allowed)
- apple sauce pouch mummies for Halloween
- carrot sticks and hummus cups (is hummus allowed?)
- can I do sunbutter and jam roll ups or something?
- raisins?
- and maybe just give them a big stash of goldfish just in case?
