Yuck is my initial reaction. It is her life and her choice, and I have my vices. I'm a teacher, and I see being a role model as part of the job. I'm sure the director already knows the teacher smokes, but if you smell it on her at dropoff or pickup that could be a different story.

Thanks everyone. I was originally not planning to say anything but wanted a second opinion in case my judgement was off. Thanks for the validation.

I don't think you can dob on someone for doing something on their own time, that sounds really inappropriate to me. I would be horrified if someone told my boss something I did outside of work to get them to do something about it when it is none of their business.

Absolutely not. As a teacher, I would feel really violated if someone did that to me since especially since it seems like the teacher was attempting to be discreet.

On top of what others have said, I suspect she might feel sheepish enough about being "caught" by a student that she'll find an even more discreet location next time!

i wouldn't say anything, it's not like she was on school property smoking in front of kids without caring. she was down the block. she's an adult and can make her own decisions and "telling" on her is crossing personal boundaries.

No i wouldn't say anything to the director. She wasn't on school property nor was she doing anything illegal. she is entitled to have a life outside of school. I don't think the message to your son has to change that some people choose to smoke and it is unhealthy and unacceptable in your house. I hardly think seeing his teacher smoke once will have any lasting impact on him. It's really no different than having an overweight teacher that eats unhealthy foods in front of them and you'd (hopefully) never find it acceptable to discuss those habits with their boss.

If it became an ongoing thing I would say something to the director about asking the teacher to find a different break spot. But if it was just a random thing today in passing, I would leave it be.

We have similar issues with IL's that smoke. Again we just tell the kids its not healthy and they shouldn't do it but sometimes people make bad choices.

Unless she comes in smelling smoky I don't think it's a big deal or that anyone can do anything about it. If my LO brought it up I would say, yes, cigarettes can make you very sick and are bad for your body, but when you're a grown up you have to decide for yourself if you're going to have them or not. Some grown ups have them even though they aren't healthy. I don't think it's the worst thing for kids to see that yeah grown ups are not perfect, and your LO has you to explain/narrate/help him process that particular issue. By the time he is a teen I think he will have the message that it isn't a good thing. Good luck!

Eh...I don't think I would say anything. The only impetus to complain would be if you could really smell it on her and then maybe you could say something about third hand smoke, but otherwise it's her business.

I always wondered about teachers and smoking. In this case, I'd probably just explain that it is a personal choice (like eating chocolate, which I do in excess even though it's bad for me!). If it was an infant teacher I'd be more worried since secondhand smoke is such an issue.

I don't think this is something that the school or you can't regulate outside of school, unfortunately. She has a right to smoke on her own time, off school property. It's a bummer but I am not sure how the school could possibly require her to not smoke when she isn't working...

Sounds like the daycare teacher was responsibly smoking far away from the school. I would not say anything, but if you do I would think about the call to action/ response you want. What do you want the director to do?

There is a huge smoking culture where we live and at least 2 of the teachers smoke (outside, far away from the entrance). I am like you, I remind my children that smoking is unhealthy and that we shouldn't do it. As much as I dislike it, it is not my business what the teachers do on their breaks. There are also other parents who smoke, and when my son points this out, I tell him they are adults, they understand the dangers and that it is their choice. I don't think you should report this to the school.

On the way to dropoff today, my son and I saw his teacher standing on the corner (down the block and across the street from the school entrance) having a coffee and a smoke.

My son recognized her and said hi and asked what she was doing.

She looked a little awkward/embarrassed, put out her cig immediately, and walked back to school with us.

I just told my son that she is not just a teacher and she was being a grownup. She was standing right there, and I didn't want to embarrass her or ignore his question.

Usually when we see someone smoking, if he points it out, I wait til we're mostly out of earshot and remind him that cigarettes are bad/yucky/make you sick. We live in an urban location and walk around a lot, so it's usually strangers and frankly I don't really care if they happen to overhear me judge their habit in front of my 3yo. But I need to maintain a relationship with his teacher.

Should I mention this to the daycare director? She was not on school property but this is not really the example I want set for my 3yo.
