@Mrs. Sunshine: glad I'm not the only one. The big thing that made everything ok was that my mom asked me about it and made me feel justified. I hope that I cab do the same for my boys one day.

@mamimami: glad you asked him about it and he was fine.

That is inappropriate and certainly goes against every Montessori philosophy I have ever been taught. I would at the very least bring it up with the teacher, probably even the director of the school. The only thing I can figure given the childish handwriting is they had an older kid "helper" that day?

I agree with everyone else, I would be extremely upset. C is only 15 months so I don't have preschool experience yet, but I can't even fathom how I would handle this. Montessori or not, this is not how I hope my child to be taught. Plus it seems like a passive aggressive attempt at communication with you and your husband. Ridiculous.

@lemondrop: oh my gosh! Once in the first grade we had a substitute teacher & we had to draw oictures. I was drawing a sun & all the yellow crayons were taken so in my 7 year old mind I thought to use red since the sun is "fire" (to my knowledge at the time anyway) & sometimes fire is red. She totally called me out on it in front of the entire class. It still bums me out lol

@mamimami: I am upset for you. I don't think you are overreacting in the least

Completely inappropriate and I would be pissed. LO goes to an "academically focused" center and they would NEVER do something like this - the learning is in putting the cube together and deciding how many to color, talking about the colors and numbers. It's not about being "perfect" in the end; the learning is in the process, not just in the final product.

That seems very harsh to communicate it to you like that.

We had some comments about concentration during a parent teacher conference. They said that they were working on lengthening her concentration time. So I asked how long she was focusing on one "work" for. They said a good 15 min at least. She was 3 and just started Montessori so I thought they were being a bit crazy. 15 min of solid concentration on a complex puzzle, by herself, seems good to me at that age. I wasn't a fan of that comment, but at least they spoke to me in person about it so I could tell them how I felt!

I think it's going a bit overboard and I would definitely ask about it nicely. There's nothing wrong with asking for clarification on a situation. You may not have the whole story even though the action seemed a bit extreme for a 3 year old's work.

I would be really upset. Quite honestly, if you aren't looking for that kind of "academic" structure, I'd look for a new preschool. It's really important to me that me daughter be able to just play for the sake of playing for as log as possible. If it was me, I'd be pissed and looking for an alternative.

I don't have a three year old and I have no experience with children this age on which to base my opinion but..... WOW! I'm furious for your little one. That just seems outrageous to me. I just showed DH and he's on the same page as me - we would want to discuss it with the preschool teacher. It just feels wrong to hold a 3 year old to account for "not finishing" something - surely it's meant to be about learning through fun, not neatly completing a project.

Are these activities counting towards grades for his college application? That is beyond ri-donk! At 3 years old, they are still bouncing from wall to wall.

It's silly, but I have one vivid memory from kindergarden (besides the bean and rice bins, I loved those!)- I had to color an elephant, and the teacher made a comment that it should be gray and not brown. 1) all the gray crayons were taken. 2) We had just watched a nature show at home with the elephants taking mud baths. Even 25 years later I'm annoyed by that. Scarred for life ;)

PS- teacher's penmanship could use some work :P

Interesting. My son is also three and in a Montessori school. I've never seen anything remotely like this, and it seems quite drastic, I think my biggest concern would be to find out if your son was admonished in any way for not completing it?
