An interesting argument I saw on facebook for voting for trump was basically that the guy didn't like either candidate, but Hillary will get support from all of the democrats and be able to get more liberal policies passed, where as Trump isn't liked on either side and so policies will be made by Congress, vs. himself.
(not my opinion, just repeating his POV).

@looch: @Adira: I heard this interesting story on NPR about immigration (both in Europe and the US, though a little more focused on the US) and how identifying the groups immigrating after you as "them" as become one of the chief ways to become an "us" and to become the "american" (or whatever country). The pretty immediate backlash the Irish gave the Chinese for example, when the Irish were certainly not welcomed here with open arms. Instead of building empathy, becoming an "us" means for many that they need to actively exclude. It was interesting and made a lot of sense.

@NCSUchick27: omg the Les Mis one. I'm dying :silly:

#TrumpBookReport is trending on Twitter. Funny stuff! A couple of funny ones:

The Hunger Games are rigged, folks. Everyone knows Katniss won because she played the woman card. Nasty woman. Very rigged. #TrumpBookReport

Les Miserables, of course they are miserable, the inner city is a mess folks, believe me. People stealing bread everywhere. #TrumpBookReport

@MamaG: same here! In theory, I'd love to see someone who's not a politician in office, though I'd worry about their ability to not be eaten for breakfast by the system (unless they're seriously nasty people :silly: ) And being a successful businessman does say something about one's skills.

But this "successful" businessman got his money (and his tax accountants) from daddy, bankrupted several businesses, and seems to be afloat financially mainly thanks to his business losses being bigly tax deductible, and to some very smart contract writing that gave him steady profits even if the business was going underwater and firing regular folks left and right. I don't think his business practices are that different from how the government is currently run. No thank you!

@winniebee: Most of my conservative friends want to vote 3rd party or abstain. However, they're are scared of a Hillary win, as well, so they are unsure, especially if they're in a swing state. But I think most have decided to go 3rd party (for those that I know). I think the Trump tapes REALLY pushed them over the edge.

@Adira: I don't think it is unique to Americans. Europe has a similar situation. I think it stems from the difference between ethnicity and nationality. Political drawing of lines around groups of people has long caused issues, wars even.

@looch: Oh yeah, I understand that completely! My family has been here for generations, so we just view ourselves as Americans too. BUT we recognize that almost all of us immigrated here at one point or another, so to look at immigration as some sort of negative thing in and of itself is just crazy to me.

@catomd00: I could get behind the ideal of having someone in office that isn't a career politician. And I'm not totally opposed to someone that has been successful in business as I fall on the fiscal conservative side of things. But, I've yet to see Trump surround himself with great advisors that can help him navigate the political arena where he lacks experience and intelligence. I'm not sure why the people who use this as their logic don't see the same. At the end of the day, our President has to play well with all of the other politicians on the hill and around the world. Trump becoming a politician and being successful without surrounding himself with strong advisors to navigate the process will be a failure. Much like if anyone of us decided to make a drastic career change without adapting to the new career. I'm an accountant, I would not make a good social worker without significant coaching!

Based on what I see from people on my FB feed that support Trump, the reason is immigration. They believe that immigrants are taking all the jobs, making the country unsafe, etc, and that Trump will put in place policies to prevent this from happening. They want an America for Americans, no one else.

@winniebee: @Adira: @MamaG:

So I lean Republican, and I am religious... But it is very hard to identify as an actual Republican b/c I am pro-choice, etc and a lot of their religiously conservative stand points outrage me too. I guess I identify more as a fiscally conservative too then?

I've been wondering how to vote also; where I live it really doesn't matter who I vote for. I think going forward, I need to educate myself better on the local political scene and get more involved in the state/local level to see if there are people that will align more with what I believe in, and care more about people that actually make things happen.

@Adira: I think you just described almost all the republicans I know, at least in MA. But in states like ours, it's never going to vote republican. To win an election they have to win the red states and swing states and my impression is that the red states have more religious / social conservatives.

I also don't think not voting is appropriate. But I'm equally disgusted with both candidates for differing reasons. I'm very anxious to see if Texas stays a Republican state in this election. I know so many people in my shoes. And normally I would be passing political signs in abundance on my daily drive. I saw my first Hillary yard sign this week.

@Adira: :) It's hard being a Republican, when you aren't of the religious right.

It's so confusing to me that so many people are so vehemently opposed to abortion, because it's against God's will. But those same people want all the guns to protect themselves. Because shoot to kill anyone that tries to harm is okay? An eye for an eye, I don't recall that being God's will isn't it something about love thy neighbor as thyself?

And yes to same sex marriage issues... clearly that's a matter of religion too. And do these people not get that our forefathers left their homes for religious freedom. And our forefathers sought separation of church and state. Why!?!?

Sorry, I'm ranting. I'm not at all in Camp Hillary, but the current Republican party disgusts me so much.

@MamaG: The fiscally conservative people that I know that are Republican aren't opposed to abortions at all. They don't think we should overturn Roe v. Wade or the right for gays to marry. But it's also NOT a priority for them. Fiscal responsibility and smaller government are MORE important to them and they believe the Republicans side with them on that.

I think in an ideal(ish) world, there would be three parties. The Religious Conservatives, the Fiscal Conservatives, and Liberals (or maybe we'd break Liberals up too, though I'm not positive on that one). Most of the fiscal conservative Republicans I know really wish Republicans would stop focusing so much time on abortion and gay right issues.
