Thank you everyone for the replies! It was good to hear positive stories, because I was really worried. My baby decided to come last week at 36 weeks, I was in labor for 4.5 hours and he was 5.3 lbs. Seeing how small he was made me thank my lucky stars he did not come any sooner! He was in the NICU for about a day and a half but we have been home about 5 days now and he is doing really well and has gained some weight. Pre-term labor is so scary and confusing, but he has been totally worth it!

I should've also added that my first baby was born at 35 weeks, they kept me in the hospital for five days before I delivered. No NICU stay, he did need to be tube fed for the first few days due to a poor latch. He's now 12.5 and just fine.

@soyjoy222: I had preterm contractions with my oldest starting at 23 weeks. It was horrifyingly scary, and I spent the rest of my pregnancy with PTL scares. I went on to deliver her at 39 weeks. I had a planned section because she was breech.

I started having BH contractions with my second very early on, maybe around 15 weeks or so. I never had PTL with her, but I did start having timeable contractions that made me dilate around 30-32 weeks. I had prodromal labor for weeks before I divered at 39 weeks.

Good luck, mama!

With my second pregnancy, I started dilating at 28 weeks. I was put on bed rest but had to go back to the hospital two more times (32 and 34 weeks) to stop contractions with fluids and Procardia and received the set of steroid shots. At 36 weeks I was off bed rest and Procardia and everyone thought I would deliver right away, but I delivered two days before my due date. Before 36 weeks, I was a ball of nerves and it was super hard on my family. My husband was solo parenting our 2.5 year old while I was on bed rest, and our son really struggled with not having me be able to do much with him. I felt lucky to make it to full term. Best of luck to you!

I just wanted to say my water broke at 34 weeks and lo was born perfectly healthy. He spent a week in the nicu due to very minor issues...never needed a respirator or feeding tubes. He is now an insanely active and full of life toddler, and you would never know he made his grand entrance a few weeks early. I know how scary it can be and just wanted to share a positive story!

I had D at 32 weeks. My water broke and by the time I got to the hospital, I was 4 cm and they couldn't stop it. D spent 15 days in the nicu, but he's now a healthy and happy 7 year old. :)

I went into pre term labor at 27, and 30 weeks, spent four days in L&D with steroid shots and a mag drip. I was sent home on moderate bed rest (ha!!), I dilated to a four and left the hospital at three. I went back a couple times with false alarms (and kidney stones twice). I was induced at 40+1!

@soyjoy222: I did have some lower back pain the night before I went in (the night I lost my mucus plug) but I didn't think anything of it. I had a small tightening sensation up near my ribs on my left side sometimes, I noticed once I was hooked up to everything that that was the contractions. I was scared to death of leaving the hospital and not knowing I went back into labor because I never really felt discernible contractions. And that first day in the hospital my back killed me, I thought it was just the bed was uncomfortable. The procardia kept my uterus pretty relaxed, but I could feel some tightening when it was getting close to my next dosage. I feel like I would have made it farther if I had listened better. The day I went into labor, I was feeling really bad that DH had been doing everything so I put a load of laundry in and loaded the dishwasher...then I had real contractions that I could tell were different. I was in denial though and waited until they were only 4 or 5 minutes apart before I told anyone
35 weeks is great! And with getting the steroids your LO's lungs should be doing good. I hope you can make it a bit farther :)

@pinkb: wow! we pretty similar experiences, except I was not put on bed rest. I actually don't have any restrictions, which I found odd? I cannot believe you dilated that far...I was told if I did they were just going to let labor happen (so every time I got a check I kept praying I was not at a 4 or 5) - you are lucky it stopped! They stopped Procardia for me this week, I miss it! I am in disbelief that you went back down to 3cm...I had NO idea that could happen.

Did you feel crampy and have back pain from the time pre-term labor started until you delivered? It's so hard to get comfortable, especially at night.

I went into preterm labor at 32 weeks ( I think it was 32+5). Had no idea, I lost my mucus plug and had a tinge of bleeding so they sent me in to be checked. That ended up being 4 days in the hospital, steroid shots, and procardia. I got all the way to 5cm but they were able to stop it. I was on strict bed rest after that along with the procardia. I went back down to 3 cm dilated (never knew that could happen! lol) They said once I hit 36 weeks they would stop the procardia and not stop labor again. I made it to 35+6 weeks and went into labor again, they did not stop it and ended up delivering at 36 weeks exactly.

I googled and googled to try and ease the worry of delivering early and what would mean for LO. Many women dilate early and make it to 38-40 weeks. But in the end just do whatever the Dr's tell you. Your body is going to do what it wants and it will all be ok.

@Mrs Green Grass: 25 weeks! I can't imagine how stressful that would have been!

@MamaCate: I am so thankful I did not have to do hospital bed rest. They considered keeping me for a week or two if things did not slow down...glad things worked out for your cousin in law, that is a long time to be in L&D!

@macintosh: thanks! I am hoping to keep baby cooking!

I want baby to be ok, but I guess I get a little freaked out when my doctor keeps telling me that if my body needs baby out for some reason they are not going to fight it. Makes me feel like something is going on...I am just a little on edge because of the constant cramping feeling. I really do not want to go back to the hospital until it's "go time".

@soyjoy222: this is not the exact same situation but the closest story i have: my cousin in law was on hospital bed rest from 24-36 weeks due to preterm labor (with twins) and had to stay in the hospital because it was the only way to manage the contractions. As soon as they released her at 36 weeks, everyone assumed that she would go into labor immediately, but she ended up being induced at 37 weeks due to low fluid. So things don't always go the ways doctors predict or expect. Good luck!

I really don't have experience in your situation since I had my LO at 25 weeks, but I know tons of preemies now and the reason they are not going to stop labor is that babies do very well at that gestation. Term is 37 weeks anyway...

I know it's scary and if it does progress now it could mean a short NICU stay, but it's also very likely to have none at all. I wish you the best and hope you make it all the way to 40! :)

I have been obsessing lately about this, so I figured I would post and see if anyone else has had a similar experience. Two weeks ago I didn't feel well, had back pain, my stomach was rock hard, felt sick to my stomach, and had weird abdominal pain that was also shooting down my thighs. My doctor had me come in and he did a cervical check and found I was 1.5cm dilated at 33.2 weeks. I spent the next two days in the hospital getting IV's, steroid shots, shots to stop contractions and Procardia pills. I was having contractions every 3 minutes and it took a really long time to get them to slow down. Baby was a champ the whole time this was going on and kept a steady heart rate and did not seem to be bothered by all the hoopla!

I'm now 35 weeks and the doctor said they are not going to stop labor if it begins again. I had an appointment this past week and I am now at 2cm dilated. Yesterday I had pink discharge and a lot of cramping and today I have a moderate amount of cramping. I'm wondering if anyone else had pre-term labor/dilation a little early and made it to their due date? If you didn't make it to 40 weeks, when did you go into labor? I am anxious because I feel like I'm a little early to be dilated like this, but this is my first baby and I have no idea what to expect. I thought I would take after my mother and be at 41 weeks with a totally closed, stubborn cervix!
