I stayed in a rental property where the back door set off an alarm whenever it was open. You had to press a button wayyyy up high to open the door without setting off the alarm.

Just wanted to update:
DH requested a copy of the HOA bylaws. It says that we can't have a 2nd fence. So, I got pissed and sent off an email. Turns out, the mesh fence is allowed. What they meant by "only one fence" is that, if we have one fence around our backyard, we can't have another around our front yard. It can be one large fence, though. I guess that's for asthetic purposes. I agree with that rule actually. Anyway--- the guy is coming to measure our pool on Tuesday! Weight off my mind!

I wouldn't feel comfortable having a pool without a fence going around it, frankly! That's my vote, too

@CupQuakeWalk: I think you need to have a discussion with your HOA about changing their rules. Having a fenced pool is a safety issue and will help with your homeowners insurance and resale value.

We have a pool and it is fenced in, my son can be in the backyard but separate from the pool, that is code.
Personally, I would disregard the hoa and install a fence around the pool as I saw fit. Heaven forbid there is an accident, the hoa isn't going to come to your rescue, you know?

As for the sensors, we have them on all the doors, my husband installed them actually.

@locavore_mama: no, it's actually ok to do,; easier than you'd imagine. We had one at our vacation rental last month. We actually called and asked the owner of the home before booking if he had a gate around his pool. When we got there, I got hooked and started begging dh to get one for our pool at home. It didn't look bad either, to be honest. I mean, I prefer a bare pool so I can enjoy the view, but it wasn't like the fence was an eyesore or anything.

@CupQuakeWalk: oooh that's not a bad price. I've yet to meet someone who has one so I wonder how much of a PITA it is to remove and put in on a daily basis. The gate is kinda $$$ :(

And that's kinda BS about your HOA. I would argue the "technical" definition of a fence. Since the mesh fence is NOT a permanent fixture like the fence around your property. :P
Our neighbors are the opposite and are horrified at the thought of us putting up a 6' stockade fence around our property. *rolleyes*

@locavore_mama: I know what mesh fence you're talking about. We have been looking into those. I think I am going to send a nasty email to my HOA :)

eta: I am going to argue that is is technically not a fence (netting) and it is easily removable (you drill holes into concrete and put poles in).

eta: here's one for a great price! http://www.allsafepoolstore.com/mesh-pool-fencing/

@jessibear: @Ginabean3: @sorrycharlie: @MamaCate: @BabyBoecksMom: @T.H.O.U.: you know...We have been thinking about a fence around ONLY the pool for a long time. We obviously have a fence around the yard (as it is law) but that isn't enough. Problem is: our HOA says we are only allowed one fence and that is if and only if we have a pool. So, we have one fence. A huge, expensive one. I think we may need to discuss tearing it down and building a decorative fence around the pool itself rather than around the yard.

@beaker: i'm not offended! I think it is great advice:) We actually do have him in an inflated suit...but if def doesn't make him float. It kind of just makes him not sink like dead weight. I am enrolling him in swimming classes in a few weeks though when my school semester ends, so hopefully we can ditch the suit entirely and just work with swim trunks.

We also have a inground pool. Plans are to install a removable mesh fence around the pool that has rods that stick into the concrete. Let me find a link.

We also need to install a slide lock up high (like high) on any exterior doors that go to the backyard. I think there are also just standalone door beeper thingies you can probably get at Lowes/HD that's just battery operated.

TBH I am very worried about her falling in as well. Whenever we are in the backyard together I am always in between her and the pool. And I never let her get close to the pool edge when we're playing.

I agree with everyone above. I know fences are incredibly expensive but it's the only way your mama brain will ever really relax. And I agree with @Beaker: as a former lifeguard/swim instructor, also. I really dislike water wings.

It sounds like you're taking great preventative measures. My aunt and uncle have an unfenced pool and a few weeks ago their 3 year old granddaughter fell (jumped?) in. By the time her dad noticed and got her, she required resuscitation and a very scary overnight stay in the hospital. She is completely fine now but we were all very shaken up. I'm glad you're getting a plan in place.

I think you need a pool fence! Like the kind that is not temporary and is drilled into the ground. Ugly I know, but really that's the safest!

We always had the baby fencing around the pool. They still holes into the patio and slide in. They are really safe. Plus locks on the doors.
Other than that invest in a good swimming class (private instructor)

We have a pool now and it is fenced off.

Growing up - it was fenced off, my mom put wood in the slider (I was old enough to know better, we moved in when my brother was in preschool), and one of those dumbbell looking alarms that sense water movement.

I was going to say the same thing. We live in a place with lots of pools and the recommendation is always to fence the pool with a strong lock and make sure it is solid. We have a community pool with a really strong solid fence and gate. Everyone I know who has a pool has it enclosed. I have no idea how much it costs but I think it would go a long way toward peace of mind.

This isn't exactly what you asked, but I would recommend that you not use the water wings or inflated suits with him, since they can give kids a false sense of security (I can float!) which would be particularly dangerous if you have a pool on your property. Sorry if this is unwanted advice but I lifeguarded for years and hate those things.

Most pools here have a sort of fence that installs into the concrete around the pool to prevent the kids from even getting to the pool. Is that an option?

If you have a pool in your yard, what have you done to secure your doors from your toddler?
I need suggestions because the stress is making me sick.
So far, we have: added an extra lock (chain lock) to the top of our back exit door
and
Added an extra lock (pin lock) to our sliding patio doors
We are looking for a baby gate that drills into the patio so that even if LO does make it outside, he won't be able to go down the patio steps and into the pool.
Is there anything else? We are beginning to research/looking to install those beeping monitors that let us know when any door (even garage and front doors) open. I need to talk to someone about how those install.
I just want to make sure I am covering things.
*Putting a pool cover isn't really an option all the time. We use the pool frequently (when DH is at work) and it is not a 1 person job to put the cover on, so most likely it'll always be off.

I have heard of those things you install in the pool that detect motion and alarm, but honestly, I am looking for preventative measures. I want to stop him before he even *touches* water.
