@paigeface: You're so sweet. Thank you for your kind words. Yes, that doctor was a condescending ass. And it killed me to have to go back to him this weekend for a sick visit as he was the only ped available since we went in on a Sunday. However, we will definitely talk about going to see a urologist to make sure all is ok. I'm glad that you had such a great experience!

@paigeface same issue here - LO is 18m and still has a pretty good amount of skin left. We have issues where it gets stuck and then he gets adhesions - ick. So we do vaseline AM and PM to keep it loose and from sticking.

The ped said at his 18m appointment it is because he still has his scrotal fat pad, and when that goes away it will likely fix on its own. She says usually it is gone by this point but she's not concerned until 2. Honestly, it looks like it was not done quite right to me (too much leftover skin), but I can't imagine it being a problem enough I would have it revised, unless he's still having a ton of adhesions.

@MUI831: I am so sorry that you were put through that. Please know that I have felt the same exact way. This is just one opinion but the renound urologist we saw did NOT make us feel bad like one of the pediatric docs in our firm did. My husband and I went in thinking that the urologist was going to push surgery and he did not. Instead he acted like it was the pediatricians lack of knowledge for making us think we had a bigger issue. I think it's a great idea and good piece of mind to get a second opinion from the urologist. They see this stuff daily and preform operations when truly necessary, at least in our case. We still push it back daily with vaseline as he instructed but aren't worried sick like we used to be about it. Cosmetic, religious and so on you chose for that procedure and I think that every single parent has the right to question that it was done correctly the first time and not feel bad if they feel like it hasn't been or question it.

I think we're going to have to take DS2 in for a procedure to get an adhesion repaired. The ped thinks she may be able to do it, but may have to refer him to a urologist to be put under, but she wants to wait longer to decide. It makes me so sad, especially since I was torn on it to begin with. We did all the pulling back as instructed and even have a cream that helps release it, but there's a "skin bridge" that likely won't release.

@MUI831: that is so mean and horrible! Sorry you were subjected to this. Obviously, the reason why we would worry about this is because we "subjected" them to circumcision in the first place! And so of course we want to make sure something didn't go wrong from
The procedure. What a jerk doctor

So great to hear! This hits close to home as we've been watching DS2's for awhile now. His normal ped doesn't seem to be concerned and that he'll grow into it, especially once he loses what I call his little baby fupa. :)

However, we had to see another ped for his 18 month appt and I asked to just get a 2nd opinion and he made me feel like a horrible mother. Basically he was like it looks fine and it's only cosmetic. He's never had a guy come back into his office asking for it to get fixed but he has had mothers come in saying their son's penis doesn't look like they think it should look. He then told me that if I want to put my son under to have a completely unnecessary surgery to make myself feel better, they'll do it. So yeah, won't ever go to him anymore.

Update:

Just wanted to let you all know that we went to see a specialist/urologist and he was not concerned and no surgery is needed. Said that it is very common and that based on his height already he should grow into it just fine when he loses his "fat pack." Thanks for all your help :)

@paigeface: Don't beat yourself up. Believe me, this could happen with a pediatrician, FP doc, OB, urologist, or mohel. (All of whom perform circumcisions.) If you see a urologist, even if you wish to avoid a full revision under anesthesia, they may have other options for treatment and it doesn't hurt to get the opinion of someone who specializes in that.

@sarac: I apologize for not including that in my post. It is also religious for us as well not just cosmetic. Now i'm wishing we would have let a mohel do it instead of our doctor like my husband wanted! Although, the same thing might have happened too!

We had half this issue. Extra skin that kept adhering and the ped had to keep pulling it back at appts. It did however resolve itself! So maybe you should wait a bit??

My 11 month old also has a lot of extra skin which I think is weird but no doctors are concerned. He does seem to growing into it. The urologist (we visited him for hydrocele) said the skin adhering is super common and will pull away. I just my boy to have a normal penis! But I think it's common to have extra skin.

My son had a revised circ when he was a little over 18 months. Our ped mentioned it at a lot of his appointments up till then. (He did not look circumcised at all, but he was and therefore we had to change up how we cleaned/cared for the area). We didn't want to do anything about it since it was largely a cosmetic issue and we didn't really care what it looked like. But then he started getting chronic adhesions and infection from stuff getting trapped inside the folds of his extra foreskin. So we ended up seeing a urologist who recommended a re-circ.

The procedure itself wasn't too bad, although I was very nervous about him going under anesthesia. We had it done at the children's hospital so they were great with him. He was away from me for about 20 min total. One really hard aspect was that he couldn't eat or drink before the surgery. He wanted to nurse sooo bad while we waited for him to be taken back. He was clawing at my shirt and screaming. It was terrible.

I was able to nurse him immediately afterward, though and they let me nurse him as long as we needed, which was nice. Again, another advantage to being at the children's hospital. Afterward was awful. He was in so much pain, screaming and trying to rip out his IV, and the bandages holding the monitors in place. He was just so confused and in agony. I honestly felt terrible like why the heck would we do this to him? I immediately had so much regret and felt like a terrible parent. The nurses told me he would bounce back quickly, but I didn't believe them. I could barely get him out of the hospital because it hurt to be carried and strapped into the car seat.

But sure enough, the nurses were right! He napped on me when we got home and when he woke up he was himself again. He didn't even take pain meds for more than 24 hrs. He just didn't seem to need it. The swelling. Went down quickly too, although we couldn't submerge him in the bath for a week, maybe 2? Until he was rechecked by the doctor. It healed very well and I forget that we ever had the original issues because it seems so long ago (almost a year now). I guess I'm glad we did it because we don't have any issues with adhesion anymore and cleaning is easier, but I still feel bad that we put him through that. If you have any other questions, just let me know!

@paigeface: I didnt even realize this could happen. I thought once it healed that was the end of it. Didnt realize more skin could grow back? Our little guy is only 11 weeks. his healed very well after the circucision and looks perfectly ok now, so not sure if that can change over time?
for us it was more a cultural and religious thing so we would want to done right

I agree with @sarac: ... FWIW, my husband had this issue with his circ (30+ years ago), and it doesn't bother him at all. He "grew into it" like you mentioned. His mom opted to not have it fixed, but it honestly just looks like a tiny scar at this point.

My nephew had this happen and a revision was ultimately recommended. I think the revision recommendation was related to the fact that he already needed another surgery (hernia) done so they figured why not since he would already be under.

Our son honestly doesn't even look circumcised, it was not done well and I feel bad about it! We did go to a urologist and he did say he'd grow into it and that it's best to wait. He's 4 now and I don't think it's changed a ton, but we aren't planning to do anything about it. We/he pulls back the skin often so that part isn't a big deal. (Sorry no answers but in similar spot...)

I'm writing on here a lot this week ladies  need more advice if you have it! So we went into our pediatrician today because our little guy has some extra skin on his circumcision that keeps trying to grow back (we noticed it when he was around 6 months and our ped has pulled it back before.) I guess they err on the side of caution when taking too much skin when they are first circumcised because they don’t want to take too much resulting in a much bigger issue. Today we went back after we noticed it tried to reattach again and my husband had to pull it back a few days ago. She said this is very common and sees this at least once a month. She thinks we should go see a specialist/urologist to get a second opinion because she saw just a bit more than she liked of extra skin. He could still very well stretch into it but it kills me to think he'll have to be re-circumcised and put under. She said it’s more of a cosmetic/social thing since we paid to have it done in the first place. My husband and I want to make a good parental decision for our son and his future too. Have any of you moms had this happen with any of your boys? If so what did you end up doing?
