What's the ratio? Our Y has group lessons that are technically 4 kids:1 teacher, but the last two sessions we have done, they have been training people so DDs classes have had 2 (or even 3!) teachers. I think 4:1 is a bit too long of a break in between turns and ends up not being that productive, but 2:1 was perfect.

Do you have a semi-private/smaller group option that might split the difference?

If not, I'd try to decide whether she just needs more practice (in which case more lessons might be better) vs. more instruction (in which case individual instruction might be good)!

The biggest difference I found for us was in taking the accelerated lessons (class everyday for a week) -- we don't do THAT much swimming in between lessons usually, so going everyday was way more reinforcing than once/week.

So private lessons are obv a lot more expensive but if you've done both are they worth it?

My oldest would be one of the older ones in the 3-5 age group of the group lessons. She is decent in the water, she just needs to work a bit more on coordinating all the movements but she can go the length of the pool and more in a combo of swimmingish / dog paddle.
So not sure if it would be worth it to do fewer lessons with a private instructor or more lessons where the focus is probably going to be on basics she already has down but could maybe finese?
