Public school. I went to public schools all my life and loved it, but the school district I grew up in was pretty well ranked. My husband, on the other hand, went to private schools up until high school - and he didn't have the best experience though he does talk about a handful of great teachers. But I also had great, influential teachers so I think the teacher debate of private vs. public is a wash.

One of the reasons we live where we live is because it offers one of the best public school systems in the nation. If we lived in an area with less quality public schools, then I'd more seriously consider sending my LO to a private school...

DH went to a Catholic private school until he was in 9th grade, and I went to public school K-12. We'd send our future child/children to public school. We live in a good school district, and public schools in our area are known for being top notch. We'd consider private school if we lived in an area with a poor public school system.

We'll be doing public school for sure but what kind is still in question. If we stay where we currently live, I'd love to try to get my daughter into one of the local magnet schools and then eventually a charter school for the higher grades.

Husband and I both were raised in public school. I did think that private school would be a good alternative if we had the money. Where ever we end up living when the time comes and if the public schools are good will help us decide.

I am so confused about school systems here in England. If I was in the US we'd definitely be picking where we lived based on the schools because I really believe in public education. As it is, I have tons of research ahead of me!
I think here it's more common to send the kids to the equivalents of public schools at first, but then move to private-style later. They keep changing the system, so it's even different than when my husband went through!

My 9 year old son attends a private Christian school. I had in public school from kindergarten to 1st grade (and 2 years of preschool). His 1st grade class was terrible and the reason we moved to private, he's now in a class of 11 vs. 35. There are pros and cons, but overall private is working much better for us. He gets one on one, and when he gets in trouble it's explained in a firm but caring way instead of just being sent to the office. He's highly advanced in reading (high school level in 4th grade) and public kept him down on the same level as the rest if the class. I could go on and on. The cons are price, even though ours is the least inexpensive in the area it's still quite a bit and not tax deductible. The parents are involved but I saw more parent involvement in public.

We are still trying to decide. Our state is 51st in the nation on per pupil spending in the US. (51st because DC is counted). I'm not so sure that I want to send my babies into that system, though we are otherwise strong believers in public education!

DS will go to public school. We are in a smaller more rural schhol district. DH and I both went to similar public schools and liked it. Good teachers are important, but being involved in your child's education and holding them accountable for their work and behaviors in school is probably one if the most important things. DH is a middle school teacher and I work with residential kids. There are soooo many parents who are oblivious to their kids' behaviors and blame the teachers for everything. If I acted out in school or didn't do my work, I got my butt kicked, my parents never blamed the teacher. Although this is all more applicable to middle school and high school.

@HabesBabe: yes! My mom was an educator for 35+ years and has always stressed the importance of parental involvement and support no matter how smart the child is, how good the teacher is, how good the school is. We also plan to be very involved in our children's education.

The only private school in our city is a Catholic school and we are atheists so we have no interest in sending out future kids there, so we will definitely be doing public school. We bought our house with public school in mind, too, so we live in a very expensive area (compared to the rest of the city) but it's in the best school district around.

Public school, definitely. Standardized test scores and class sizes scare parents away-- the most important thing is that your child gets support from you at home!

We purchased a home in a good school district specifically so we weren't paying school taxes to a public school and tuition to a private school.

I went to a Private school all the way up TO HS then for HS went to a Public. I def see the PRO's to the Private school after experiencing both myself. But like you said, the cost and getting in is a big factor.

Public. Smaller class sizes would be nice (although I don't think every private school has smaller class sizes), but I wouldn't assume that private schools have more parent active involvement, there are tons of kids in private school whose parents work 100 hours a week each, just like pubilc school. I went to public school and there were tons of involved parents :)

Hubby and I went to public school, and we moved to this house because we have good public schools around us. But we just found out they're opening a new Jewish Day School, so when the time comes we'll consider that. It's charter so it won't cost anything. And I think it would be nice for her to learn more about her religion and have daily Hebrew classes. But we'll see, we have a few years.

Do you plan on sending your LO to public or private elementary school? We moved to a neighborhood that has excellent elementary schools and always planned on sending our LO to public school. My husband and I both attended public schools and really enjoyed it. But the more I read about the benefits of private school, I hate to admit that I'm a bit more intrigued now. Smaller class sizes, more individual attention, active parent participation...these all sound so great to me. But, of course, the con is that it's ultra competitive to get in and not to mention the cost!

Do you plan on sending your child(ren) to private or public elementary school?
