Sounds normal! :). K Would only nurse 5-7 min. and only on one side. I'd try tickling her toes, rubbing her cheeks, and stoking her head. But if she fell asleep I'd let her sleep.

@oliviaoblivia: yeah, I think I may have just lucked out! Her lazy feeding was 17mins on one side, and she spit up after, then passed out super sleepy, and that was definitely one of her longer nursing spells. The average is more like 10 a side, break for burp in the middle. She's definitely gaining and has lots of wet diapers...so I guess I'll chalk it up to her being efficient! I'll take that :)

My LO would feed for about 20 minutes per side in the beginning. Now at six months she's down to about three minutes.

It does seem a bit short, but you might have an efficient nurser. If babe is gaining well and having enough diapers I think you've just lucked out. In the beginning I was nursing for five or six hours a day it was so tough.

For the first few weeks my LO's normal was about 15min breast feeding before falling asleep. But I don't think there is really a normal.

@Kemma: I agree..we've been following her lead for the most part...it's just these daytime ones that confuse me. But honestly, I'drather her be awake and cluster feeding in the day, so I guess I'll just roll with it!

@birdofafeather: @babyjmama: @sslm: thanks guys :) she does have plenty of wet diapers, and at her last appt was gaining fine... So really,.... I need to chill LOL. I think the shock of having a newborn is just starting to hit! At least she's sleeping 2.5 hrs at a time tonight!!

Totally normal although my LC did encourage me to try for longer feeding times to stimulate my breasts to build supply and fill her up. But if you're doing all that than LO might just be up sooner to feed again! You're doing great!

Baby's have such wee tummies, especially when they're newborn so it's perfectly normal for your LO to graze and snooze.

Providing you're getting plenty of wet and dirty nappies, good weight gain and latch is feeling good then you're doing great!

@Bookworm: we've all been there with the paranoia, I think it comes with the territory. :-) and for what it's worth, I really believe that bf'ing works best when we don't over think it and we follow baby's lead - she'll let you know when she's hungry!

I had (and still have) a forceful let down, and so LO nurses for about 5-10 minutes and only on one side. She's done this from the beginning and gained weight like a champ! So for me, it's normal.

Paranoia is fully normal :) my LC and I texted and emailed way too often lol! I baked her cookies as a thank you ;) I had low supply so she always had me bf for 20+ min on each side, but that's bc j wasn't getting much so idk if there was any other reasoning.

Thanks all :) she just nursed for about 15mins on one side, so hopefully she's good to go down....

I'm just a super paranoid ftm...probably losing my mind a bit ;)

I rely on frequent weight checks and wet/dirty diapers to help me figure out if he's getting enough. If his weight gain was good, I let him sleep when he wanted, eat when he wanted but if his gain was borderline, I really pushed to keep him awake or supplemented with pumped milk. At 13 weeks, he's gaining pretty well and I don't worry as much but when we were struggling, frequent weight checks were so helpful.

To me (no expert), 5-7 minutes sounds a bit short for a newborn. Just make sure she's gaining weight like she should be, and having lots of wet diapers. In the end, that's all that matters (that she's getting fatter and staying hydrated).

I'm not an expert but I'd say its "normal" for a 9 day old and you're doing great. I really don't think there is such thing as an average/typical time for feeding so don't get too caught up in the numbers. Feed her when she's hungry, let her sleep when she's sleepy. You're doing awesome mama!
When do you go to the pediatrician for a check up? I was so excited/relieved to hear that my LO was thriving and my milk was really all he needed!

5-7 minutes may be fine if you have a forceful letdown. When I used to BF, LO would eat and be done in 5 minutes.. When she would fall asleep, I would stroke her cheek/chin to encourage her to keep eating, but if she was done that was it. Do you have to switch sides? Maybe LO isn't getting the fattiest milk out?

My LO rarely nursed for more than 10 min per side and only wanted one side per feedings! We also did the dipe change in between but he rarely took the other side ! So - totally normal ! You are doing great!!!

LO is 9 days old, and so far is EBF. She has put herself on a bit of a schedule, amazingly, and sleeps roughly 2hr naps during the day, and 3hr stretches at night.

My question is mostly for the daytime...she gets very sleepy while nursing, and we usually change her diaper in between boobs to wake her up enough to want seconds.

Sometimes though, after like 5-7 mins on a boob, she will pop off watt sleepy...no amount of gentle jostling or nudging will get her to take more...so I burp her and put her down for a nap...only for her to wake up less than an hour later absolutely starving.

Is that normal? Should I be doing more to keep her awake before/during feedings? Is 5-7 mins on one side an avg feeding? I have no problem feeding on demand, since she is so little, but I don't want to send her to bed hungry!
