@GrapeCrush: He's doing really well, thanks for asking! His pedi did put in an order for a stool sample...man was I naive thinking I could just bring in a diaper! She needed 4 different completely liquid samples with no urine contamination (the instructions suggested covering our toilet seat with plastic wrap), and the samples had to be kept at different temps (two at room temp, two on ice) and had to be no older than 2 hours.

I called her back the Friday after his last appointment, because daycare called and he had already pooped like 5 times before 10 AM (ended up being like 12 for the day). She put the order in for me to pick up the kit on Saturday, but asked that we give the probiotics a few more days to work (so not until Monday). She said the labs would take 7-10 days to complete and would be pricey (even though I think my insurance will cover it).

Luckily, we didn't have to do it...whatever it was cleared up by Monday, so we didn't do the sample, and he's been regular ever since.

It's so funny how obsessed we get over things like poop, though....I literally did a happy dance in the bathroom the first solid one he had!!! :silly:

@lovehoneybee: from what I read (just googling though!) toddler diarrhea can be more chronic. I'd definitely have seen the pedi too though! Hopefully it's back to normal asap!

@lovehoneybee: have you looked into Toddler Diarrhea? I think R has this. We are just finishing up a week of diarrhea. The last round was 10 weeks ago. I am going to start documenting everything. I don't think it is a lactose thing cause she goes for weeks without any diarrhea and has multiples dairy a day.

@anbanan15: She ended up not needing a sample. She thinks that because his mood/energy haven't changed at all that it's likely not a parasite or bug. She prescribed probiotics that she wants us to try for a week, and if we don't see any improvemen she'll bring us back in for real testing. (We just moved to Lancaster Pediatric Associates.)

We deal a lot with poop here and save a lot of diapers for evaluation.

I would take pictures of today's diaper to show at the least. If you are concerned about blood or large amounts of mucus or anything like that that from this particular diaper, I would close the diaper, put it in a zip lock bag and place that inside a paper bag in the fridge overnight.

Depending on what stool tests they run the sample will need to be fresh, frozen, refrigerated and/or collected over several days, so today's sample may not be useful for those tests anyway.

@lovehoneybee: Stool sample expert here. Just wait for your appointment. They'll give you whatever containers they want you to use. It may be a handful and some are filled with a liquid. Just toss today's diapers and start fresh. The little containers have scrapers in them, and the liquid free ones usually come with a tongue depressor for scraping. They'll likely give you a toilet insert if he poops on the potty. Don't worry about it today, though.

@2littlepumpkins: Toddler diarrhea wouldn't bother me, but it's been going on for almost 2 weeks now, which leads me to believe maybe something else is going on :bummed:

D ended up bringing E to the doctor (along with a typed up list of his poop over the past two weeks...) and I'm waiting for a call back from him now.

I know this is really hard but sometimes they don't want there to be any pee mixed in (based on what I've read I haven't had to do one for dd) so I don't know what they'll say about the diaper. Hope you have answers soon. Sounds like "toddler diarrhea" but also sounds like other stuff. I really hope you have answers very soon.

@Kimberlybee: @GrapeCrush: Well I ended up putting his morning diaper into a ziplock, so if they don't want/need it/need something else it'll be easy enough to just toss. His appointment is later this morning...I'm hoping we can start to get some answers. 8 TIMES he pooped yesterday!

I had to give a stool sample for DD when we were having poop issues. She just happened to have pooped when we got there, so I saved that diaper. But they still needed a sample so I had to take tongue depressors and scrape poop from her diaper into test tubes/vials and drop them off at the lab. It was so gross!!

Oh no! So sorry that he is going through so many poop issues. I never knew how important poop was until I had a kid. I inspect her poop more often than I'd like to admit. A friend of ours always put the entire poopy diaper in a big ziplock bag to bring to the doctor but this was many years ago. Hope someone calls you back from the dr's office.@lovehoneybee:

I would wait until you talk to your doctor. We just got done with a stool study here. (Talk about Eww). The doctors best answer is it happens because he is a toddler.

AKA possibly the weirdest thing I've posted.

So E's been having some digestive problems. Namely, diarrhea of flash flood proportions. We thought maybe it was a lactose issue, so we (with daycare) cut dairy last week. His poop got close to normal, so we reintroduced last Thursday. His poop stayed semi-normal. Not as dense as normal, but it was at least holding a shape. He never complained of pain or seemed uncomfortable, so we thought probably not a lactose thing, maybe just a bug or something he's almost over.

Until today, when he pooped 8 times over 12 hrs. His daycare teacher said after his nap he was "swimming in it". No form to it at all. His last before bed included food that he had at lunch (that I could clearly make out) and some mucous.

I don't know what to think, except that today was a really shitty day (pun unintended), and I'm feeling very defeated. It seemed like whatever it was had run it's course, but it's back and worse.

ANYWAY. He has a doctor's appointment tonorrow, and the nurse I spoke to last week said they'd probably want a stool sample, which I assume I'm to provide.

I have an unopened pee sample cup for my next OB appt. Can/should I just scoop some from his morning diaper into it? Try to catch it from the source (eww!)? Bring in the whole diaper in a ziplock bag? The receptionist I talked to today didn't say anything, but I'd like to be able to expedite figuring out what's going on, if possible...
