We did and it was definitely worth the money. Total, it cost around $1000. Plus she took LO's passport photos too, which was tricky to try and do. We had to do a lot of takes for that.

The photog who did our wedding pics is primarily a maternity/newborn/child photographer. We have bought a package from her that is 4 sessions (maternity, newborn, 6 month, 1 year) with full digital and printing rights to 25 images from each session (100 over the package). We get an online gallery to choose which 25 images we want to own, and the whole package costs us just over $1000. We also get free sitting for holiday pics (easter, halloween, christmas) but have to pay $25 per image for full digital and printing rights. This works out alright for us, because DH owns a pro photo printer, so printing is pretty cheap for us.

DH is actually a photog on the side, but we want him to be in pictures, so this is what we do, our baby will have tons of pics on its own (we have about at least 10 thousand pics of each of our pets on the hard drive from his home photo shoots!)

I think I could take decent shots of the baby on my own (at least 2-3 over a 3 hour period! haha), but I would really want a few shots of us as a new family-- this is the only reason I would want another person (whether it's a professional photog, a friend, etc.) to do it.

Crazy!!
We did a newborn shoot but got a good deal. I mentioned this on WB, my SIL is a professional photographer and she did my senior, wedding and maternity photos but she lives six hours away so she couldn't make it out for his newborn pics. So my little brother was friends with a girl who ended up starting her own photography business at only 16 yrs old, but she has the talent of a real professional photographer! So I had her do them and she just gives a cd of images.

That is an idea, look on craigslist for student photographers looking to build their portfolio? Or is there a college/art school nearby where there may be photography students?
Newborns are harder to photograph than you'd think though, and I had to nurse him every ten minutes to keep him content lol so make sure whoever you choose does their research and is patient. It took us 3 hrs for the shoot! Baby dictates the shoot ;)

Oh, and the $250 shoot is the "sitting fee" only... I still have to buy at least $200 worth of prints or digital copies, which are $50 EACH!!!! WTF.

I found a pretty good newborn photography team that charges $250 on weekdays and $300 on weekends. I almost sh*t a brick when I saw those prices... until I started seeing quotes for $500, $950, $1000+... ALL for newborn photos! I'm sorry, but I think that's just ridiculous.

We might go with the $250/$300 photog-- hubs still isn't 100% convinced. One of my good friends has a cousin who's starting out with photography and she might cut us a deal. I don't even want to buy prints-- I just want the digital copies!

@regberadaisy: Honestly, if we weren't gifted the shoot I'd be fine DIYing it. I love love love the photos, and I'm glad I have nice pictures of LO when she's so teeny tiny, but they get kind of outdated pretty fast. 8 months later she looks nothing like her newborn pictures and I feel weird not having more recent pictures up. But my family paid so much for them so they're staying!

@betsyboop:
I've been looking and running into the same issue re: digital release and the requirement to buy x$ in prints.

I really want to but not sure if we can swing it financially. So need to talk to my husband ASAP about it.

If not we have a DSLR I figure I can DIY at home??

We did. I wouldn't have gone with this person if it wasn't a gift. She takes amazing photos, but like you said, super expensive! Any print, even a 4x6, was $40 each! My sister gifted us the session and 3 photos, and I'm sure she got a good deal because she's friends with the photographer. My parents bought some more photos, so we just scanned them so everybody could have them. And we got off without having to pay anything!

Did you use a professional photographer to take photos of your newborn? We are definitely going to hire one but I've found the prices to be sky-high!
A pet peeve of mine is when photographers require you to purchase $x in prints through them, and essentially hold the photos hostage via an online gallery. I think I finally found someone who will give us the images on a CD, but the entire session and CD is still going to cost us around $1K :(
