Thought I would chime in. But I'm NOT a doctor and it sounds like your doctor has different reasons for putting you on progesterone.....

In my case, I have low progesterone after I O, so my DR. prescribed it to be used sort of how @spaniellove: and @KT326: have described. I'm to start taking it a few days after a positive OPK. Then, after two weeks, take a pregnancy test. If it's positive, keep using the progesterone! If it's negative, stop.
The Progesterone will keep your period from coming at all, which is why you have to rely on the test itself to determine what to do next.

But again, I'm no expert and your doctor should be able to explain exactly why they want you to do what they want you to do. Don't stop asking questions until you feel like you understand what they are asking you to do!!! Good luck!

@mrs. 64: Ok, that makes a little more sense if it is being used as a treatment that way. It would have been nice if they explained that to you the first time!

Like the other posters, I was also told to go on it after confirming O after timed intercourse or IUI.

There is one other situation in which I was told to take progesterone. I went to my obgyn because I wasn't getting regular periods after coming off BCP. I was just spotting here and there and didn't get my period for months. So my doc said to take it for five days and then stop, and then my period would come. So the purpose was just to jumpstart the next cycle so that we could at least try.

But yes, I agree with the others that you should definitely clarify with your doctor. Be as specific as possible and ask him/her to be as specific as possible.

I was told to take min CD16-26 I this was scheduled for right after O and soon enough for me to start my period normally if I was not pregnant. My cycles were 28 days long but I just had low progesterone post MC. I've been taking it everyday now that I am pregnant. Every case is different. Maybe ask why she has ordered it for everyday could help you understand the madness.

Thanks ladies. After reading more info I'm thinking she must have meant it will help me get pregnant in the long run, but was not clear that it would impossible to get pregnant while taking it under these conditions. From what I've read many doctors recommend a 3-6 month treatment with these instructions in the hope to shrink the endometrial implants which would in turn hopefully help with TTC. Not sure I want to go that route though. I wish I had understood this from the beginning.

Hmm that doesn't make much sense. I took progesterone after my IUI during the TWW. I was told to stop taking it when my beta came back negative and I would get my period within a few days. I also took it to induce a period when I started treatments, I didn't get my period until I stopped taking it.

I would call back again.

I'm not completely clear about the situation but...if you're TTC you should only take it after you've confirmed O, because taking progesterone can prevent O. Also, it's possible that stopping the progesterone brought on AF, because it's the drop in progesterone that makes AF start. So I'm not sure how they expect you to get your period on it?

Hmmm...I would suggest calling your doctor again. There's nothing wrong with asking to have instructions explained again.

I only took progesterone after my egg retrieval and transfer for my IVF cycle. Sorry I'm not much help!

I'm so confused by my doctor's instructions for progesterone. I am taking it for endometriosis. She wanted me to start taking it at the onset of pain in my cycle and then take it continuously every day until I got my period. Last month I never got my period and figured I did something wrong so I stopped taking it and AF arrived.

This month I called the nurse to check with the doctor's instructions. She said to take it every day, even if I don't get a period. She said this would not interfere with trying to get pregnant and would actually help. This makes no sense to me.

What were your instructions for taking progesterone (either for endometriosis or not)? Do the instructions my doctor gave sound "off" to you? Also, did you have side effects taking progesterone?
