Music is a really good one, I know a lot of people hate it but kids music seems to buy me more happy time in the car. See if you can tether one or two toys to the car seat, it really stinks when they are engaged with something and they drop it. If a melt down is imminent opening and closing the back windows often helps. Keep a basket of things next to you so you can just toss them back as needed.

Good luck!

I second looking for interesting household items. We've used a garlic press, turkey baster, danish dough whisk, balloon whisk, a cup with stuff she can put into it and take out of it, a remote control with no batteries, things with zippers, an old mitten... look for things he maybe hasn't played with before if you can, because the novelty-factor can really come in handy. Snacks are good, but you'll have to be able to safely get them back to him... if it's really not going well and you are able to, you can make lots of stops. We do that quite a bit. Good luck!

We play fun music, sing loudly and make more stops than usual (we take 2 hour trips a lot, or last big one (three stretches of 8+ hours in the car) was when he was 6 months old and he slept half the time (very unusual for him). We have another big long trip coming up in a few weeks, though, and he's 11 months old so I'm hoping for some good tips!

Lots of toys and snacks! We even try non-toys and they work great. Things like GPS's, plastic bottles and cell phones have workef great for us.

I took DS on a road trip with me 4 hours one-way when he was 4 months old. It was so easy because he was still in a stage where he slept a ton. Now, at 10 months he needs way more entertainment.

Next week I'm supposed to make the 5.5 hour road trip home alone with him and I'm so nervous!! He hates being strapped in his car seat for long amounts of time. We'll leave early in the morning while he's still sleepy so I can also catch his morning nap...but I need advice or tips on anything else I can do with a solo roadtrip with a 10 month old!
