Thanks everyone! I am going to contact HR and see if I can speak confidentially to an HR Generalist to help me figure it out. My boss and I have a good relationship, but it's like an ingenuine good relationship. We're both good at faking it. And I think she may be pissed about this meeting I skipped.

I think that after Saturday, if we get a signed lease, then I am going to give the Nanny notice that we won't need her after May:( She is a good person and I feel bad, but it will be over a whole month's notice!

@mrsjyw: This. Definitely agree with this!

I know this wasn't really the subject of the thread, but I know PLENTY people who put in a notice two weeks prior to bonus expecting to still get it and did not. It sounds like from previous threads that your job may not have all that many qualms about calling payroll and pulling it back, so I'd wait to put in notice the day you get it in your bank account!

I wanted to chime in to say that I would NOT give them any type of notice that you are leaving until after your bonus check clears. I know several people at my company now and at others who put in their notice, and then bonus was not paid out. Even if you put in your two weeks, theyre under no obligation to honor that, and even if they do pay you out, they can consider it a lump sum and not a continued employment...therefore making you ineligible for the bonus. Just a heads up

I am inclined to agree that keeping her on might be the best course of action but perhaps a compromise would be to give her the one months notice and ask her to figure out if she can fill that time during the last week of May with her other job or with a new one. If she can't fill the time have her come in anyway and pay her. Ultimately, I think that giving her a full months notice is really nice and if you can't make it work to pay her that week then that's life but I am sure she would appreciate that extra wiggle room.

Seriously, I'd pay a nanny my arm AND LEG if she'd stay with us while we packed up. I think you might be underestimating the madness it will be :/
Plus, I do think it's just rude to let her go with a long enough notice and paid for last few weeks.
I think in the end, you may be pissed about paying it, I knooow, but it'd probably be worth it.

One of my old coworkers did not receive bonus because he was not employed with us by the time it was paid out. I don't recall if the bonus payout date was within in his two weeks are not.

I would not risk the bonus. Go to Dallas and give your two weeks when the bonus check clears.

@mrsjyw: So true!! Definitely be careful I have had bosses that try and find ways not to pay bonuses.

I would pay her through May. Even though it's costly, you will get so much more done with a nanny there to help. Packing is a PITA!

Even though you don't want to have to pay her if you aren't working, I'd lean towards keeping her on. You'll be able to wrap up any packing, go see friends, that sort of thing. Plus, I'm afraid that your job would make you go on the trip and then make your last day the 23rd to avoid paying you any bonus.

I would pay her through May even if you don't need her the last week. If she has been good at her job, I think $400 is a nice gesture of appreciation.

I would be really worried about giving notice so early with the intention of being paid until May 24. Do you still have a good relationship with your manager? My state is an at-will employment state--there is no 2 weeks notice on either side. When I gave my notice, I told them that I would like to work until date X, and my manager thought it was fine since I would have enough time to wrap up my projects. However, they could have terminated me that afternoon (which they have done with some of my co-workers that have left for competitors).

I would just have your nanny come in for May even if you're unemployed. I think you'll appreciate the extra help while you're packing and running around doing errands.

Yeah, trust me, I know how it is to spend money with no income! I did it for 2 years! Still, though, I'd just keep her on through the end of the month. Good luck!

this might not be the best advice, but maybe if you really trust her and have a good relationship with her you could let her know now about not needing her services by around the end of may and explain the two possible outcomes? that way she could plan for both possibly or may have some suggestions that help you guys?

i hope that it works out with getting your bonus, finding time to pack, and finding an affordable and amicable way to let your nanny go! :)

I would keep her on because if for some reason you are still working that last week in May you could need her. And if you don't but still have to pay her, $400 isn't the end of the world and you could get a lot of packing done.

As an aside - I'd be careful about when you submit your two weeks! If the employer decides not to keep you on the whole two weeks, your last day may not be May 24th!! I'm not sure the specific laws in FL-- but I know that the two weeks' notice is not a legality in a lot of states and the company can screw you over on your bonus!!

@looch: It's just that she's over $100 a day, which is $400 just for one week when I won't have an income anymore. I'm kind of hoping that once I give them notice, I'll have 2 weeks paid to do packing and such and I will still pay her to come, bc I'll still be getting paid:)

Mmmmmkay. Need help on how to handle letting my nanny go.

We love her, but we are definitely moving sometime in June, and I will probably stop working the last week of May.

We don't have a contract, so I have no contractual time frame of when I would give notice, but to be fair to her, I wanted to give 1 month's notice, or as close to it as possible.

Here's the deal: She has another job, she is a massage therapist at Massage Envy on the days she does not work here. She has to plan her schedule pretty far out, and I had already given her dates/times that I need her for the whole month of May.

We have a pretty solid renter bringing his wife to see our house this weekend, and if they sign a lease, I think they'd need to move by mid June, so WE would have to move mid-June and just sublet a furnished apt or worst case, stay in an extended stay hotel, until our house is done end of July (that will be madness, but if we have a good renter, we have to go with it!).

I am supposed to go to Dallas on May 13-16. My DH will be home, so that's fine for childcare, but the whole pumping nonstop and affecting my supply is a bit worrisome to me. I need to still be employed on May 24th, because that is when my bonus for Q1 will be paid out, and you have to still be employed on the date the bonus is paid out to receive it.

I was kind of hoping that if everything goes well this weekend and we get a signed lease, I could give notice sometime the week of May 6th that my last day would be May 24th. And hopefully they would just tell me to wrap up my stuff that week, don't worry about wasting their time and going to the Dallas trip, and just pay me through the 24th, in which case I would also get my bonus. That is very perfect world!

The problem is that the last week of May (27th-30th), I have told the nanny the May schedule and the last week of May, when I don't plan on (hopefully!) being employed anymore, I have her scheduled for M-Th, 9-5. Which means she has blocked her schedule of to work for me those days. I know she can change her schedule fairly easily (she has done so when Ineeded her to work an extra day here and there).

I'm fine with paying the nanny while I'm being paid (even if they tell me not to work, I would just still have her work since I would be paid, and I would pack or get ready to move). But is it bad etiquette of me to give her notice next week that May 24th will be her last day? And just leave her to work out that last week?

Or do I tell work that I will work the rest of May and then be done? That would mean I would have to go on the Dallas trip- ugh!

Sorry for all of my drama lately! I really appreciate any advice from you all:) You've been so helpful with this crossroads of my life that I've got going on!
