@T-mom, that's great to hear! I couldn't find any other tights to get her (No way am i doing a romper, what a pain in the butt to change her in!) but waffled on sizes. She's long and skinny, so we'll have to slather up her ankles, lol.. I'll probably run around in 50 spf for once!

@mrsjyw, haha, bet you couldn't even see the baby under there ;)

@blackbird: thanks for the PSA on the code! I really want to get a coverup for myself, and my dermatologist highly recommends Coolibar products. I was really vigilant with the kids when we were in the Bahamas recently, but I was careless with myself. I ended up getting a bad burn ( and I don't burn that easily). Lesson learned!

I am assuming it is going to be really hot, like over 100 degrees in the shade during peak hours.....

I brought my son to the Mediterranean in August, we'd be at the beach at 8 am and again at 6 pm. Rest of the time, we were either inside or under a shaded area. It was so hot, he mostly just wore a diaper! Rash guard was used once, I made the mistake of buying a dark one a little too snug.

@blackbird: we went to mexico in feb with LO who was 15 months. He is super fair. I had a hat on him at all times (one that tied under the chin) and got him a long sleeved/long pants rashguard. He looked a little silly, maybe, but it protected him! This is the one we got.

Oh yeah i bought the Neutrogena Baby 60 spf. I'll probably pick up some California Baby for day-to-day, though. I haven't seen it in 50, though!

@honeybear, those pants! GENIUS!

@mrskc, we have one JUST like that! I got it at a baby sale. It's awesome

She tears her sunglasses off, too, ha. My kid's a menace.

@babyboymom: 2-4 pm sounds like a good time to dump, i mean, take...E to the on-site daycare :)

For myself, it's so easy to say "oh i'll stay in the shade" but it's hard to wrangle an independent 1 year old when she's determined

Rash guards are where it's at. Lands End sells them for slightly older toddlers--I think theirs start at 2T, but honestly, you don't want a skin-tight rash guard on a wet child because it's a major pain to take off. Go up a size and roll the sleeves if you have to.

I like Babyganics SPF 50 sunscreen. Pricey, but pretty smooth and easy enough to apply. We live at the beach and I have tried a lot of different sunscreens.

@lawbee11: I know they seem like a good idea, but I really dislike those pool floats. I had to rescue an older child (not mine) who sort of knew how to swim who managed to get into one and flip the thing over. It's really easy to carry a baby in the pool, plus, it's fun. I think they generally feel more secure if they can hang on to you (read: cling!) when they want to and always know that you've got a hand on them. Also, if the baby is in the water, they are not protected from the sun even if they've got a little canopy over their head, because the water reflects up.

ETA: I haven't ordered from this place, but these swim outfits are a fantastic idea: http://www.coolibar.com/category/Girls/Infant-6M-24M/pc/2220/2255.uts They're quite a lot more than I'd normally spend on an outfit (maybe there's a coupon?), but I love the idea of UPF swim tights for babies and young toddlers.

Ok, so we live here and here's the deal- the natural sunscreens only half work, better than nothing of course but I wouldn't count on them too much. The best thing is to stay in the shade- real shade from a tree is better than those umbrella nylon fabric. Second best is clothes, especially rash guards and a good hat goes a long way (something you can tie so LO can't knock it off). And I would plan to be indoors in the early afternoon, 2-4 o'clock sun is intense! I try not to go out post nap until around 5.

I think a long sleeved rash guard would be good. I used this hat by Sunday Afternoons last summer for DS. I like the it is wide brimmed and drapes over the back of the neck to protect that area too. It has a chin strap so that might help to keep it on her head.

http://www.amazon.com/Sunday-Afternoons-Play-Child-Years/dp/B00IMKIMNC/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1397764804&sr=1-1&keywords=sunday+afternoon+hat

I also have this Thinkbaby sunscreen It's SPF 50 and a natural sunscreen. It rubs in pretty well too.
http://www.amazon.com/Thinkbaby-Baby-Suncreen-SPF-50/dp/B005GRBBPK/ref=sr_1_6?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1397764924&sr=1-6&keywords=thinkbaby+sunscreen

@blackbird: beware though that those blankets probably don't offer much SPF protection. I know if FL they say a cotton white tshirts only offers like 10SPf.

There are good mineral (zinc) based sunscreens that go up to 50-60 SPF.

To be extra safe I went with a chemical spray that I could touch her up with and go over her head with (since she wasn't always keeping a hat on).

Maybe look at baby Banz too because your eyes can get sunburned and your lips too!

Oh boy, that's a hard one!
I'd say start practicing with the hat now, even indoors. Hopefully she'll warm up to it.
Bring some A&A type blankets with you everywhere - they're lightweight enough to cover her up with, or just flat out wrap her if the sun is too intense
Long sleeve rash guard for water, but since it'll probably be too hot to cover up out of the water, lots of sunscreen (and blanket covers!)

I live in AZ, so hot as shit here too! I pretty much force DS to wear a hat. I just keep putting it on and eventually he give up on taking it off. Long sleeve shirt or rash guard. I bought some cheap white long sleeved shirts for him at target and I put on him when we are playing in the back yard.

I'm all about the all natural way, but in the summer I vote higher SPF over natural. Also read the sunscreen bottle and apply early. The one we have says apply 15 mins before sun exposure.

When it comes to sunscreen, I'm always going to pick a higher SPF over natural. It's just too much of a risk for my genes. LO is also always in a rash guard and hat unless it's late in the evening or early in the morning.

What's the best way to protect a delicate 1 year old's skin from the sun in Mexico? We're going in July. And it's going to be hot as shit. All the safe/natural sunscreens only go to 30 spf. 30 spf is a joke on *me*, and I'm worried it won't be enough for her. 60 spf? Rash guard? I have a 50 SPF rash guard from Coral & Reef I bought off Zulily awhile ago

I'm hoping the baby/toddler pool has some shade! We seek shade out, but you know, 5-10 min here and there adds up, and heaven forbid i miss a spot on her body!

Just something I'm thinking about while I distract myself from work :)
