I do a lot of PB Cliff bars, but you are right - almost all of them have tons of chocolate (or chocolate "flavored" since god knows what its really made of...) ingredients. My husband eats these:

http://www.pureprotein.net/category/BARS

They have a lot of calories but he gets super hungry + works long hours.

I'm a fan of Clif bars and ThinkThin bars. Clif bars offer more variety, but I prefer ThinkThin when it comes to nutritional value. No sugar!

There are some non-chocalate-y luna bars-- I love the lemon ones, but they are still sweet. My mom swears by south beach bars and they are pretty good-- I've tried the peanut butter and cinnamon rasin flavor and they are yummy.

Quest Bars. They're not perfect, but by far some of the best on the market, if you can look past the stevia (the original flavors contain sucralose). These have tons of fiber which is always great when you're ingesting lots of protein.

I'm a therapist at a university-based weight management clinic and we sell bars that are high protein, lower carb, lower calorie - some are made by Advanced Health Systems (also branded as Robard and Diet Health and Sports) and also bars from a company called Protidiet (Canadian company). I like them WAY better than ones I find in the store. A lot of the bars do have chocolate, but they have some that don't and most are around 160 cal with ~15g protein (usually 8g sugar or less and at least 5g fiber). I think mydietshopz.com sells both brands and sometimes has free shipping. They are VA based and i hear they ship quickly. If you go that route and have questions about the flavors, let me know.

@locavore_mama: I think it helps make the protein taste go down easier? I know I like the chocolate-flavored protein powder better than other kinds! I agree it does not make that much sense though...

@blackbird: yup, DH makes a protein shake at home after his work out every morning. But he's always hungry now from working out. I know he likes to eat high protein items on days he lifts heavy weights. So it's nice to have them as back up for his 13 hour work days!

And yes, I'm checking out all the nutritional info and ugh. I don't want to give him a 20g protein bar that has 200+g of sodium and 20+g of sugar!

A lot of protein bars have a disturbing amount of fat and/or sugar in them! Very counterproductive unless you are hiking all day or doing major training. Protein shakes (the isolate kind) will actually help his work outs a lot :). Otherwise I like nut and fruit type bars for high protein snacks. Larabars aren't bad. I keep seeing the mega protein ones advertised on bodybuilding.com quite a lot. But they're 40g which seems like overkill for most gym goers

I was going to recommend the luna protein bars but they are chocolate coated and for women officially so it sounds like that is not what you want.

DH likes the balance bars but I think he gets chocolate. Not sure what other flavors they have...

I've been eating the Perfectly Simple by Zone line lately. They don't have as much protein (about 10g depending on flavor) but I like how they're made with less ingredients. There's a cranberry almond one that's good, but I usually go with the oatmeal choc chip.

Depends on the flavor but I like ThinkThin bars. They have 20g protein and are very low sugar for a bar. Chunky peanut butter is my favorite! But, they still taste like proteins bars and I wish I was eating something else instead!

My DH works out almost every day because of that he's always hungry!
I'm looking for some protein bars for him that actually taste good too. You know, not like cardboard?

Preferably not sweet, doesn't have chocolate etc since he's not a sweet fan. Available via Amazon subscribe and save will be perfect.

A quick Google search turned up this one:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0068020W2
