@VEGMAMA: Yes, education is most important to me, and offering my family the best options for food. It would definitely be easier to go vegetarian for LO if my husband was (or was close) but I am so used to cooking for him now. He is a lot more thoughtful now about where the meat he eats come from so I'm happy about that!

@VEGMAMA: we're a family of vegetarians! (DS was born a healthy 8lbs 2oz, 21.5")
I'll admit I'd be a little sad if he decides he wants to eat meat.

We're not vegetarians, but we only eat meat for 2-3 meals per week and ideally DH would like that to get down to 1-2 meals. I don't plan on cooking any differently once DS is older unless he decides for himself that he wants to be a vegetarian, and then I think DH and I would both be willing to eat vegetarian full-time at home.

I've been a vegetarian for 15 years now! Almost 16 :)

We raise Chloe as a carnivore, but will support her decision to be a vegetarian/vegan/whatever when she is old enough to make those decisions herself.

@artbee: I think that's really common. My sister is 14 (so crazy), and she just started eating real meat. She only liked chicken nuggets until a few years ago. Now, she'll eat steak, bacon, and crab. Still a pretty picky eater, but she tends to go towards healthier options ...

@travelingbrit & @JERRICABENTON :: I LOVE your philosophies ... I think it's more about raising children & educating them on their food choices (no matter if they are veggie or not). Kudos to you both for being proactive in that department. I'm sure if my husband ate more meat (like 4 times a year), then we'd be in your shoes, but it's just easier since we don't eat meat at home (well, I never do anywhere).

Another veggie here! Been about 3 or so years. I'm still deciding my stance on raising DD as a veg though. I'm not sure DH would be up for it! He loves meat!

I have been a vegetarian for 3 years now. Everyone else in my house still eats meat. I rarely prepare it for them anymore. I keep it to maybe 3 times a week because it really grosses me out to prepare it. I will start Alia out being veg and then let her make her own food choices when she gets older.

I've been a vegetarian for 21 years now! Wow that sounds crazy - I started when I was little! I have no desire to go back but my husband is very much a meat-eater. It took him a long time to get used to the way I eat and I'm proud to say he will tolerate and even enjoy meat free meals once or twice a week now! I've decided not to start our daughter as a vegetarian though. I'll support whatever she wants to do when she's old enough to choose but I think what's right for our family is to expose her to meat (organic, local when possible, healthy - not processed/cold cuts) so that she can decide. I was a very strong minded child and decided early on that meat wasn't for me and my family was awesome about it! I want to do the same for her.

Not a vegetarian.... but LO seems to want to be. She's just not a meat lover, My sister is a vegetarian so my mom ended up cooking veggie meals since my sister was 14, I have a feeling I'll be doing the same. Right now LO will only eat hot dogs and the occasional turkey deli meat. Whatever she wants to eat, I'll make her.

16 year vegetarian here. Had a vegetarian pregnancy despite meat eating SO's wishes.
So far DS only drinks bm and formula but I'm not planning on raising him vegetarian.
Whenever I buy meat for SO, i buy organic/free range etc, but mostly i cook vegetarian in the house. Majority of the meat he eats is if we go out. I plan on handling it the same way with LO.

I think its extremely important to teach him where his food comes from and let him make his own choices. I plan on taking him to my aunts farm to see first hand like I did when i was little.

If SO was vegetarian, or we lived in a more vegetarian country I would raise him that way....but the current plan is educated omnivore for DS.

Are there any other veggie mamas here? I've been a vegetarian for 5 years, and I am so very excited to get pregnant (and raise a vegetarian baby). I haven't seen much on the boards about it, and I know I can't be the only one here!!

Our families sort of rolled their eyes when they learned that we'd be raising a vegetarian baby, but I think they know better than to argue the point.

I am just really proud to share this lifestyle with a little one ... and provide a healthy/nourishing diet that is free of meat, and most animal products. I should mention, I have nothing against anyone who eats a omnivore diet ... just for me, vegetarianism is my ideal lifestyle.
