I'm going to come back & update every few days just in case anyone in the future searches this thread!

I'm on day 4 of Provera & the only symptom I've noticed so far is being tired around the same time every day and my boobs are just now starting to get sore.

I used Clomid to conceive my first, as I have lean/atypical PCOS (amenorrhea and string-of-pearls u/s were only symptoms).

My REI prescribed 100mg days 3-7. I came in for an u/s my first cycle on it, just to make sure that there were enough/not too many follicles. Everything looked good, and I wasn't monitored any further that cycle or at all for subsequent ones. I ovulated around Day 16/17, and conceived one baby on the 2nd cycle. No symptoms for me -- it was pretty straightforward and painless :)

I'm currently in the middle of my first monitored clomid cycle. My midwife will do two monitored cycles at 50mg each before referring you to a RE. I have borderline PCOS. I have all the hormonal symptoms, but blood work is normal, although slightly elevated numbers. I had an ultrasound on cycle day 3 and they said it looked highly suspicious of polycystic ovaries. I took clomid days 3-7, and luckily I had zero symptoms whatsoever. I was really nervous about that. Today is day 12, and am waiting for a positive opk. I have another ultrasound scheduled on Tuesday to see what happened. My midwife counseled me that if pregnant, I have a 1 in 10 chance of having twins, 1 in 100 of having triplets, and 1 in 1000 for quads. We had to agree to the risks before she would proceed.

Been on provera + clomid twice and gotten pregnant both times. Answers to your questions:

-How long did you take Provera? For a few months, don't remember exactly, it was 5 years ago.
- How long after the last pill did AF show up? I think I got my period the last day of the Provera pill.
- Any side effects? Nothing extreme
-What your was experience with Clomid? What days did you take it, when did you ovulate, what symptoms did you experience, were the cycles monitored and most importantly did you conceive twins (!)? Clomid was successful for me. I took it days 3-7 and my cycles were NOT monitored. 100 mg Clomid is what worked for me. It was just with my OB. I got pregnant both times, although first resulted in miscarriage at 11 weeks. One baby each time. Wishing you nothing but luck!

@Bibliolove: I do plan on asking more of these questions if/when I decide to start Clomid.
But, from what I did discuss with the RE, the Clomid is just a way to reset my body following a few losses and give ovulation the boost it needs. I have never had an ovulation (or fertility) problem until I had a miscarriage so they don't feel the need to monitor for that reason.

I filled a prescription for Clomid and was too scared to take it. I know you will be fine, I'm just a scaredy cat. I have read that Clomid can also cause you to have less CM, so you might want to see if that is the case and try something like PreSeed.

I'm sorry I am on my phone and didn't read through everything. But are you being monitored? How will your doc know if you responded well to your current dose? I think a limited amount of rounds are recommended for Clomid due to the lining issues. This is just something to keep in mind if in the future you move into other interventions. I didn't want to take Clomid without monitoring and an IUI, as I have read monotherapy is not as effective. My lining is thin already so that was my reasoning.

Good luck!

@mrskansas: I don't remember what they said but I do think it got worse in a cumulative way, so it makes sense. I remember the first NP saying she was comfortable doing 3 cycles unmonitored and after that you needed RE monitoring. I think if it's going to work, it's most likely to happen in the first few cycles anyway, but of course nothing is certain with TTC!

@mrskansas: Not overly so.
My lining was at 7.5mm and my doctor wants it over 8mm during the first cycle. So it had thinned slightly and would probably only get worse over time

@bhbee: The nurse I spoke with mentioned that thin lining usually isn't an issue with the first cycle or two and that usually the thinned lining is from long-term use of Clomid. Did your doctor ever tell you anything similar or is the nurse making that up? Lol. Not that I don't trust them but all doctors and nurses seem to have different opinions!

hey lady! here's my experience from years ago. is it super creepy I have a TTC journal where I wrote it down??

I took 10 days of provera to end a long cycle, and on CD88 I got AF. my last provera was on the 1st and AF came on the 5th so not too bad, can't remember side effects. then I took clomid days 3-7. every cycle I took it I got hot flashes while taking it, and again at the end of the cycle, and it made me crazy moody those days. I didn't like how I felt on it but I knew it was limited days each month and then it was over. I usually ovulated around days 17-18, it can push your usual ovulation a bit, though I had no real normal then (now my normal is 15-17). I didn't need provera again since clomid did get me to ovulate those cycles.

my first go round I did 50mg, ended in chemical. I did two more cycles at 50mg, one BFN and another chemical. fourth cycle I did 100mg, increased side effects, successful single pregnancy. this was all unmonitored as I got the rx from an NP and was starting with an RE while taking it (so I did all the initial testing, HSG, SA for DH, all that good stuff). we just did OPKs and tried to time it.

second time around ttc, I had regular 32-35 day cycles post partum and managed to get pregnant on my own, lost it to chemical and ended up talking to a new RE about why I kept losing them. much more testing later, they really had no idea and suggested we try clomid and IUI which included monitoring. I did maybe 4 clomid cycles with IUI (including trigger shots), I believe 3 BFN and 1 more chemical. this time it seemed the clomid was making my lining too thin and I think it may actually have been part of the problem. that's why I would prefer to do it monitored even though monitoring is a giant pain. in the end that time, they wanted us to move to IVF because the RE's only guess was embryo quality (and in Boston it would have been mostly covered). we couldn't because we were moving states but in happy luck we ended up with our second successful pregnancy on our own.

so in short I think clomid can be great, it really seemed to help when my cycles were a mess trying for #1. but I also had more of a negative experience the second time so monitoring can be useful, it may not be the right drug for you (some REs will also prescribe Femara off label, mine didn't but it is supposed to be better for your lining). I did get a BFP 4 times on it, but only 1 stuck, which is probably my issues vs a clomid issue.

I think it's worth trying because it's much more low key than most treatments! I hope it works for you!!

@MaryM: I wouldn't mind having no appetite for a while, haha!
I'm actually not sure if I was prescribed prometrium or Provera but I think it may actually be the former. I'll check once I pick it up this afternoon.

I'm trying to do as much research as possible to make sure this is the right route for us too. I really appreciate your insight & I'm sorry you're struggled through this process

I also commented in the annovulatory thread...but to add to that...

Some cycles, I've taken progesterone (prometrium, not provera. My dr. prefers bioidentical hormones) and I've gotten AF before I even finished my round of pills. Sometimes, it would take a few days before it kicked in.

From what I've heard, the side effects for prometrium aren't as bad as provera. But I've only taken prometrium. It kills my appetite when taken orally, but that's not the worst thing in the world.

I've only taken femara (Dr. preferred because I have PCOS). I take .5mg a day CD 3-7. I've had some hot flashes, but nothing major side-effect wise.

We weren't sure if we were ready to take that step when the doctor offered it last year, but she suggested it after my hormone profile. It showed my estrogen was low pre-peak, and she said femara would help force my body to produce more (and therefore, have a healthier ovulation). Our overall goal was health and good cycles, so that sounded like a good idea to us.

I was offered it a few months earlier by my OB at the 6 week follow up to the stillbirth of my daughter, and it's part of why I left her practice. Because we weren't ready for it, and she couldn't tell me why I really needed it. But with the research behind it and knowing there was something it could "fix," it made a lot more sense. And my hormone profiles after taking it were better. I conceived my second treated cycle (but lost that baby to Trisomy).

I took provera for 10 days and then several days later got my period. It was somewhat heavier then normal and lasted a day or so longer then normal. I tried 1 cycle of clomid I produced 3 follicles and my lining was 7.5mm I did not conceive that cycle and my doctor switched me to femera to hopefully reduce the number of follicles I produce and get my lining over 8 mm. On clomid the worst side effect was hot flashes and night sweats, which I am still having night sweats 3 months later, no idea if its linked or not. I was monitored because of the PCOS and my bodies ability to go from not ovulating to over-ovulating

@mrsjd: Yeah I don't have any other known issues either. I have a daughter that was conceived naturally the first month, and since we started TTC #2 I've had an ectopic & miscarriage which my OB strongly believes was just bad luck. I'm 24 so really hoping Clomid is the little boost we need!

I have atypical PCOS - meaning I don't have any of the hormonal markers but I have cysts on my ovaries.

Prior to using Clomid, I used provera a few cycles to get my period during long annovulatory cycles. I usually got my period either on days 9-10 or right after the last pill.

Once I didn't get pregnant using provera only, OBGyn prescribed 50mg of Clomid, plus estradiol, metformin, and progesterone vaginally. I took Clomid days 3-7, then estradiol after that, then the vaginal progesterone. I took metformin each day. Cycle 1 of Clomid, I ovulated on day 14, didn't get pregnant. Cycle 2 of Clomid, I ovulated on day 14 and did get pregnant with my singleton daughter! No side effects from provera or vaginal progesterone. I did have crazy night sweats from the first cycle of Clomid, none for the second.

Edit - I wasn't monitored.

@Kitkat: thanks for the info! My cycles have been really messed up following a few losses, so my OB thinks that Clomid may be the trick to get everything back on track and make my ovulation a bit stronger. I guess there's not really a need to be monitored in my situation!

@mrskansas: I did, just because I wanted the most data possible. I was worried I had PCOS since my cycles were so irregular and I had a few other symptoms as well. My new OB did a blood draw to check hormone levels, sent my husband for a semen analysis, and did an ultrasound to look at my ovaries. Based on how they looked, she was able to tell me I would ovulate within a week, and she was right!

@Kitkat: Thank you for sharing! I don't believe that my first cycle on Clomid would be monitored and am wondering if that would be an issue or not. Did you feel more comfortable with monitored cycles?

I was prescribed provera, but didn't send up taking it because my period finally showed up on its own. My cycles were 50-60 days.

I took clomid 50mg on days 3-7 and ovulated on day 26, did not get pregnant.

I then switched OBs since the first one was not monitoring. I again took clomid on days 3-7, but 100mg this time. The new OB monitored this cycle and I ovulated on day 20 (I was also temping and taking OPKs). I got pregnant with one baby :) I don't think clomid ups your chances of twins all that much...maybe by 10% if I remember correctly? Also, I did not experience any side effects on clomid.

Good luck and let me know if you have any other questions!

Hi, it's me again with yet another TTC question.

I saw an RE yesterday on cycle day 41 who confirmed I didn't ovulate this cycle. They have prescribed Provera to induce a period and they also offered Clomid. For those of you that know my history, I'm not sure that I want to continue TTC let alone try Clomid, but I'd like to gain some perspective.

-How long did you take Provera? How long after the last pill did AF show up? Any side effects?
-What your was experience with Clomid? What days did you take it, when did you ovulate, what symptoms did you experience, were the cycles monitored and most importantly did you conceive twins (!)?

I apologize for so many questions but I would love to hear about what others have experienced so I can use it in my decision.
