I would stock up the kitchen for her, since she seems to be helping you out in a bind, I would try to be as hospitable as possible. Whenever we have someone come babysit, I always get pop, snacks, pizza (stuff we don't really keep in the house) so they have something to eat. In this situation I don't see it as an employee since it's just for a week and she's a friend.

As a nanny I usually always are what the kids ate, or found something else. I didn't start bringing my own lunches until I had my son and I brought food for the both of us

I'm in Ohio and our sitter brings her own food. She knows she is welcome to whatever we have and I've offered to buy her favorites but she passes most of the time. I nannied in college and always brought my own lunch or ate what the kids left over.

Yes, this is pretty common to provide food or $ for lunch for nannies in NYC. I keep lots of food in the house and stock Pellegrinos, which ours loves. I think it would be nice to either have more food in the house or include lunch money.

We tell her to help herself, and we make sure to have things in the house - yogurt for breakfast and at least one salad a week that she likes from the store. I know she also brings her lunch a few times a week. We do whatever it takes to keep her happy.

At the very least, you could get a loaf of bread and some fillings (lunch meat/cheese, tuna, etc.) that she can make herself.

I was surprised at the whole thing because it's not like my work buys my lunch, but I did a little digging on nanny forums and it seems to be pretty standard.

@Danizaur: if she's giving a deal, then I'd maybe leave some extra cash each day for food or delivery!

Hmm. I would expect to bring my own lunch to a babysitting job! I did have a nanny position in college where I ate what the kids ate, but they were older and it was part of the deal. Our sitter brings her lunch when she comes here. Do you know of something she likes that would be easy and convenient to leave for her if you do provide lunch?

I used to babysit & the parents always left money for pizza!

I always offered to get food & snacks for our sitter, but she declined. She has Celiac disease so it was easier for her to provide her own rather than me shop -- but we did offer & are still willing!

I asked our nanny if there were any specific snacks/drinks that we could keep in the house for her because we don't have a lot of extras around either. She still brings her lunch, but I wanted to make sure we had some stuff on hand for her.

Eta: this had nothing to do with how much I pay her...I just want her to be comfortable in our home.

@mrbee: Hmm. She is kind of giving us a deal. I thought maybe letting her help herself to what we have was good enough but I didn't factor this in.

I think it depends in part on how much you are paying, and how tight the labor market is around there! If she's doing you a big favor, you should definitely provide lunch or spring for takeout. But if you're paying her a competitive rate and the market isn't tight, then it feels more fair for her to pay for lunch herself.

I let L know she's welcome to anything in our house but she always brings her own food. I know she's "working" for us, but I also am very hospitable

Normally T stays in an in home daycare. Next week his babysitter at that day care will be gone, so we have a friend who is going to come to our home and watch T all week for us. I wouldn't call her a professional, but child care is just her calling. We told her we don't keep a lot of food in the house (we ATTEMPT clean eating...therefore have basic ingredients in hype house only) and she would probably need to bring a lunch.

She kind of gave us a blank look. I told her she's welcome to whatever she can find, but we don't have a lot to offer. DH mentioned later stocking up the kitchen with snacks and other types of food for her. Im just not sure if we should provide her food.

What do you all do?
