@Iced Tea: Yes, I've talked to so many non-Americans who are completely puzzled why you would ever let a 16 year old drive, convenience aside! And agreed on pillows...

Yes, allowing children to drive is one of those things that shocks foreigners about the US, and for good reason.

The suffocation stuff. In cases where we had the baby sleep on a bed, my husband always wanted to put pillows all around the edges of the bed, but I protested. I told him the kid can survive a fall from the bed, but suffocation is pretty hard to come back from!

@Mrsbells: It's not in the vital statistics, but when I looked into this the biggest culprit is couches. It is very easy for an infant to suffocate between the cushions. This sadly happens with the most prevalence in low income homes where there is often not a safe space for the infant to sleep, but can obviously happen anywhere so I am super vigilant about never falling asleep on the couch with LO. After that, blankets or other things in the crib or anywhere else that infants sleep. And co-sleeping with parents that are intoxicated from drugs or alcohol is obviously a big no.

@bhbee: Great point, maybe by the time LO is old enough there will be self-driving cars.

@Corduroy: This surprised me too, and is so sad. I was actually talking with DH about it last night, and we were wondering if part of it is that kids have so little autonomy (in addition to little experience knowing that when things are bad, they usually ultimately get better). Like if they are being bullied at school, they can't decide i.e. to look for a new job the way many adults would.

@808love: It's really scary. When my brother first got his license, he was driving (with another adult in the car) and being inexperienced, just panicked, swerved when he didn't need to, and ended up totaling the car (thankfully no injuries). My mom had horrible anxiety that he would get in a serious car accident for years afterwards.

I was surprised how highly ranked suicide was even in the 10-14 year olds.

I had no near death incidents or injuries but I did get in a car accident as a teen. I hopped in a car of my newly licensed ( 1 day fresh) friend who immediately crashed into a parked car within 2 miles of our home. Distracted driving.

@Mrsbells: my only hope is that technology gets better to prevent the distracted driving. But then there will probably be something new and scary to take its place :bummed:

@periwinklebee: does it say what is the main cause of accidental suffocation?
A lot of these things are so scary. For me the main concerns with teens these days is the distracted driving. I cant imagine what it will be like when DD is old enough to drive. A lot of teens I know are so nochalant about driving whilst multitasking. Makes me very uncomfortable

I know this is not a fun topic to think about, but the post about drowning inspired me to look up statistics on accidental deaths by age group, and I found it really informative: https://www.cdc.gov/injury/images/lc-charts/leading_causes_of_death_highlighting_unintentional_2016_1040w800h.gif

In particular, there are more than 2x as many accidental suffocations by children under one than drownings of 1-4 year olds each year, even though by construction there are around 4x more 1-4 year olds. My husband has laughed at me for being really paranoid about accidental suffocation, but I feel vindicated. Motor vehicle deaths for infants are actually incredibly rare.

And it's also insane how much motor vehicle accidents go through the roof for the 15-24 category, as well as unintentional poisoning (drug overdoses). My biggest takeaway is that while I need to be vigilant, LO is pretty safe before the age of 15 but things get much more dangerous once he's old enough to drive and potentially do drugs. I have newfound sympathy for parents of teenagers/college aged kids who tell me to enjoy it while it's easy

Fyi - this is total deaths to all causes: https://www.cdc.gov/injury/images/lc-charts/leading_causes_of_death_age_group_2016_1056w814h.gif
