I am not saying they are safe or should be eaten. Just that there is a link to the caramel apples. </p> <p>Additionally it is quite possible that the caramel allows for listeria growth in a way that plain apples don't. The plant identified in the recall Bidart was a supplier for the caramel apples. Listeria was found in their facility. This widens the recall to include all of their gala and granny smith apples and those of unknown origin.
