@mrskc: I'm just glad it was brought to my attention yesterday! I also found this cargo bag that was quite a bit cheaper than the other... we might go for this one instead (our budget is locked down tight right now).

http://www.amazon.com/Highland-1038800-Weather-Resistant-Storage/dp/B003SWNVBM/ref=sr_1_34?ie=UTF8&qid=1370018038&sr=8-34&keywords=car+cargo+organizer

Oh AND under the floor mat, on each side, I saw bolted tethers that I think I could use to secure it! (there are another set right behind the seats so we might use those for the stroller ratchet straps!)

@MrsCB: Thank you! I didn't realize they made things to strap them in with the seat belt.

@mrskc: You get a harness, preferably shaped like this in case of a crash - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=4092374&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo

And an attachment that goes through the seatbelt like this and clips to the harness - http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3951212&f=PAD%2FpsNotAvailInUS%2FNo.

@runsyellowlites: thank you for posting this! It's my goal to take care of this this weekend. I think we already have ratchet straps so we'll use that for the stroller and I think that duffle bag you posted is a great solution!

How do you secure large dogs with out a bolted in pet barrier? We have a lab.

@MrsCB: does this count? :D I'm not sure how you properly restrain a cat in the car, but he gets buckled in and he like the seat heater on high, hehe.

Not SUV related, but similar to not having loose objects flying from the back, those suction cup window shades can easily be traded for cling on type to avoid loosely mounting a metal pole next to little heads in the back seat. Also after market DVD players ppl attach to headrests and toys on the carseat that are often hung from a plastic claw or link are all projectiles in an accident.

Thanks for posting!

We keep our bob in the back..I wonder if just having that cover thing would be secure enough since the bob is so heavy. We haven't been using it lately.

@jmarionsmith: I would think that if the trunk space is open to the rest of the vehicle that anything back there unsecured could also become a projectile! eek!

I edited the title to include hatchback drivers! Thanks for bring the open trunk area to my attention! I guess in this case, since I don't know alot about the space, it's better to be safe than sorry!

Also, please please secure your pets. They are in serious danger of hurting themselves and everyone in the car if they're not seat belted or otherwise secured. I get so upset every time I see someone driving around with a dog loose in the car. We even saw one jump out of an SUV a couple weeks ago and run into traffic, almost causing several accidents.

(Edit: I started this specifically for the open trunk space SUV & hatchback drivers have but some great info regarding unsecured pets & objects regardless of car type has been added so I wanted to be sure everyone saw this great info!)

After yesterdays post about rear-facing until age 4 I was doing some reading on car safety in general, specially unsecured objects & projectiles in the case of an accident. We have a Ford Escape so my first thought was things that are in the *open* "trunk" space, like the stroller, groceries, and anything else we might be taking along with us, and what was I to do with G's backless booster when he's not in the car?!

I posted about it in a car-seat safety group I'm in & got some great feedback from some techs so I thought I'd share!!!!!

1. For your older lo's always have them buckle their seat belt when they get out of the car... this will secure their booster! Some of you may already do this but I seriously never thought of it!

2. Get some ratchet straps, cargo nets, or cargo covers for the items in the back. Tbh I don't feel that nets or covers would be strong enough in the case of a high-speed collision (God forbid) so we'll be getting some ratchet straps for ours.... Right now I'm using bungees but I was informed that in a high impact collision they could snap & become harmful! (oops) I think I'll keep using them until we can get the ratchet straps though! (we'll be connecting them to the framing that attaches the backseat to the car... unless someone knows a better way). Of course the ratchet straps are a bit inconvenient to always do BUT the thought of our stroller crushing us or the kids is enough for me to do it!

3. Use a cargo organizer or large duffel bag to contain items like groceries or other loose items! I think I'm going to get something like this b/c the cargo organizers I've found thus far are all open & I want something I can secure & close!
http://www.amazon.com/Rola-59102-Expandable-Hitch-Cargo/dp/B000E7WLJW/ref=pd_rhf_dp_s_cp_3_2TWJ

4. Pet bars! I've heard that IF they are bolted into the frame of the vehicle they are a good solution as well!!! If they aren't bolted they run risk of coming loose & being harmful as well! For us, having the ability to transport large items, sans kids, with the fold down seats is a must so we won't be going this route... it could be a good one for some though!

If anyone else has some things to add that you've done PLEASE do!

(I put this in parenting (general) since the focus is safety for the bebe's but please move it if there's a better board for it thx)
