@Mrsdaredevil: Yep, if you store it it starts to go "off" how quickly depends on how much excess lipase there is (some peoples milk goes off within minutes, some is just after freezing/thawing). It is still "safe" but some babies won't drink it.

@aMohror: it's when breastmilk has too much of an enzyme that breaks down the milk quicker than normal, resulting in soapy smelling/tasting milk. It's still safe for lo to consume but some babies wont drink it. I think it affects frozen milk but also refrigerated milk? Not 100% sure but that's the gist of it...

Yes it happens wit frozen milk. I did a test run in the beginning after hearing about this. I froze a couple of bags in the beginning and then defrosted them a week later and offered it to my LO and she was fine with it. so then I knew it was ok to build up my stash without scalding the milk first

Oh! yikes. Maybe that's what happened to my bottle refuser? HE only started refusing the bottle when I went to freezer milk. Hmmmmm
Next bottle attempt I'm going to try non-freezer.

@MsMini: I don't know what it is either! So it tastes okay straight from your breast but not when it is in a bottle?

I too had stored a bunch of milk and then read about the lipase issue and freaked just thinking about all the milk that might have gone to waste.

@betsyboop: I have heard that, but I so rarely pump and bottle feed that I don't mind the odd formula bottle, so I can get out and get my hair done or whatnot. I am just sad about all the wasted time and effort.

Ugh, so sorry to hear. I also have excess lipase but my lo will drink it anyway. I read if you scald your breasilk right after expressed that will help w the enzyme issue

Sawyer has been refusing to bottle since about 8 weeks old. I tried again the other day, and he refused again, lots of gagging and just wouldn't take it.

My milk has always smelled fine, but I finally tried tasting it. It was gross, tasted like soap. No wonder he wouldn't drink it. I am going to that and taste my milk to see if my whole several hundred ounce stash is gone.

I am going to re-try giving him a formula bottle, because I need to get a break now and again.
