@erinpye: This times a freaking million. I have friends with the mindset that women who take approved medication while pregnant are somehow selfish for not putting baby's well being first - but mom being depressed and miserable and the baby not getting any nutrients because you're SO sick is far more dangerous.

On closer study, this article is pretty frustrating. The article is basically completely false. It specifically says that "based on" a study showing a correlation between zofran use and cleft palates, the fda has "cautioned against" using zofran during pregnancy. Not only has the fda not cautioned against using the drug, there has also more recently been a larger study showing no increase in cleft palates in pregnancies involving zofran use.

Straight from FDA's website.

Unless this is a new report that has not been published on the FDA's website, I see reports about possible heart complications. I don't see a report on pregnancy alone.

I would talk to your dr and see what they suggest.

@erinpye: someone in my Facebook feed posted this yesterday and people immediately started freaking out. Like you, I checked for an official notice from the FDA and didn't find one. I hope they address this article soon because it's making the rounds quickly.

@erinpye: thank you so much!!! I was really nauseous ALL the time when 3-13 weeks with dd... It helped me a) function and b) be able to eat and drink besides ginger ale. I know that's not nearly as bad as HG but this still made me panic!

Call the FDA and ask to speak to someone in the human drug division: 888 463 6332.

Statement: "We have not issued new safety reports on Zofran. What we have posted on our site is what we have (from 2012). It is not yet approved by the FDA for use in pregnancy, but remains a category B. We will address the article that is making claims using our name and logo."

Basically, I know you were only trying to be helpful, but please don't post something so frightening without making sure it's legit. It's difficult to explain the absolute misery of Hyperemesis adequately (it's not "just intense morning sickness," it's its own very dangerous and extremely difficult disease). It puts your own health and your baby's health at risk during your pregnancy, and Zofran is an actual life-saver. Moms suffering HG agonize enough over taking meds during pregnancy, and I hope this fictitious article isn't causing them extra anxiety and stress they don't need.

I never would have survived pregnancy without Zofran. I was sick from 5 weeks until my son was born, and even with Zofran was unable to gain weight, I lost 10% of my body weight in the first trimester even using Zofran, the side effects would need to be pretty dire to convince me not to use it.

@Vegmama: I think that's what's hard about drugs. A lot of times, it's not so clear cut as to what's "safe" and what's "not." Rather, it's what is the safest alternative when going drug-free is not a good choice for either mother or baby. The class system is helpful, but only to a point. Zofran is the only thing that got me through 16 weeks of pregnancy without losing my mind, so I took it. Not eating and not being able to function was clearly not helpful for the baby, so I did what I have to do.

Thanks for sharing, though. I think these conversations are great, as long as doctors and women realize that everyone's needs are different!

Our midwives still say it's safe! The risk of dehydration & extreme sickness is worse than the risk from the drug. I'll be looking for an update from the FDA ... I couldn't find anything past the link I shared.

@erinpye: Thank you for your post. I immediately started googling and couldn't find anything directly from the FDA regarding this updated warning.

I did find several articles referencing the Danish study, which was cited in the New England Journal of Medicine

http://www.babble.com/pregnancy/is-zofran-safe-during-pregnancy-one-study-says/

Not true. "Researchers at the Statens Serum Institute in Copenhagen, Denmark, analyzed 608,385 pregnancies — comprised of both women who had been exposed to Zofran and women who were not exposed to the drug.

And their conclusions were nothing but clear: among the 608,000 women they studied, there was no increased instance of miscarriage, still births or birth defects in newborns. Researchers also found that there were no increased instance of preterm labor or low birth weight found in the women who had taken Zofran at the start of their pregnancy."

A little googling will lead you to the whole study.

Sigh. Everything is bad for you when you're pregnant. Deadly sandwich meat and cheese, Zofran....What is this Diclegis that is approved? I've never even heard of it, but it's new and FDA approved! (sarcasm)

Oh man :( Zofran was my only means of survival for a couple of weeks, but I weaned myself off of it as soon as I was able. I wish there was something safe too! This scares me for LO #2!

This link popped up in my FB feed today ... The FDA is now saying that Zofran is not safe during pregnancy. Our midwives offered it during the 1st trimester, but our pediatrician has a huge poster in his office warning against it. Just an FYI ... PS, I know that so many women have relied on Zofran to get through intense sickness ... I wish there was something SAFE for pregnant women.
