I looked this up as I started to panic about my impending trip (with my son; I'm Canadian with US permanent residency and I have not yet applied for his CoC)

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/visit/dual-canadian-citizens.asp

This does not appear to apply to Canada-US dual citizens.

I'm Canadian (living in Canada) but my husband has dual citizenship with the UK, and he's never had a problem using either passport. For a long time he always used his British passport when we traveled to England because it let him get through customs faster. I made him stop doing that because it meant that I had to wait in the customs line by myself, so now he always travels on the Canadian passport. I guess that's lucky, as it seems now he wouldn't be allowed to travel on his British one.

I don't know, my son was fine travelling on his Australian passport into Canada twice prior to November 10th 2016 (when the law changed - interesting date....) - since then I know 3 families that have been turned back at immigration at Vancouver airport for not having Canadian passports for their foreign born kids. Like sent back to Australia after having just gotten off the plane. I know its always recommended to travel with all your passports but Canada is now the only country where its illegal not to and where you will be denied entry.

That's awful about the wait time for the CoC. We got my daughter's within 6 weeks of her being born since we were applying for her passports right away.

We aren't Canadian, but my kids and I are dual citizens (US/France). We've been told by the consulates in both countries that you have to use the passport of your country of citizenship if you are in that country (for example, if I'm in the US and something were to happen, the French government would not help me since I'm also a US citizen). This basically means you need to travel with both passports if you are traveling back and forth between your citizenship countries. You can choose to use whichever passport you want when you travel outside your citizenship countries.

Those are crazy long processing times :bummed: . Luckily you haven't bought the tickets yet. But about entry to countries of citizenship (for dual nationals), I think that may be the same for all countries. A friend that works at the consulate says that you always enter your "home country" with a matching passport. So, even if you leave using another passport, you always have to present the passport that matches the country on arrival.

Hi bees, I'm not on here very often but I'm just putting this out there for any Canadians that might be in my position - I moved to Australia 12 years ago and became a dual citizen, had my son here 3 years ago. We traveled back to Canada twice before my son was 1, with both of us using only our Australian passports.

Recently a dear friend was getting married in Canada and it coincided with some time I had off work so I planned to take my son back to Canada for a holiday and the wedding. Thankfully I hadn't bought tickets yet when I found out that it is now compulsory for Canadian dual citizens with current passports of both countries of citizenship. The kicker is that my son is an obligate Canadian citizen because I'm his mom, but because he was born in Australia, I have to get him a certificate of citizenship before I can apply for his passport, and the CoC takes 12-16 MONTHS to process. They can expedite in extreme circumstances (death in the immediate family is the only one they mention on the gov't canada website), but otherwise we are stuck. I've resigned myself to it after fighting with a million people on the phone and at the Canadian consulate in Australia.

I hope that this can help anyone who has travel planned and who is in my position! And Canadians, if you have a child born overseas apply for his or her CoC IMMEDIATELY after they are born! I wish I had!
