This is why there is a big bag of supplements just sitting under my bathroom sink. I bought a lot of TTC supplements, and later read a report about the lack of scientific studies showing that they're effective. It was a bit liberating, really.

This is really disappointing considering how much money I am spending on supplements to increase my supply. :(

Wow! I wish the FDA regulated herbal supplements and vitamins. That is scary.

I've done my best to find what I think are reputable brands for the supplements that I take. They may not be perfect, but at least for my vit D, my levels have gone up. Mostly we try to stay away.

This is really difficult to deal with, especially since I know the best source is real food, but I often don't make the best choices.

I think this makes a good case for sticking to very high quality supplements, particularly those available through NDs. I try to avoid supplements sold in the grocery store/drugstore for this reason...their quality is so poor and thus their efficacy is really questionable. That isn't to say that higher quality supplements are perfect, but I think there's a much better chance that they are what they say they are.

@Espion: Yep, agreed it's an issue with FDA regulation. The moringa I take actually comes with its own analysis report on contents of that particular bottle.. it's too bad they can't force all compaines to do the same.

Although the same is very true of a lot of our food supply! Thinking back to my work on the salmonella in peanut butter outbreak... that company ran tests and FOUND contaminants in their PB but didn't have to do a recall or take any action...

I read this over the weekend and I'm going back and forth on whether or not to stop taking my Fenugreek. One one hand, it seems to help a tad, but on the other hand... I have no idea what I'm taking in, apparently, and that scares me.

@Espion: That's scary :/

When I was in medical school, a biochemistry professor used mass spectrometry to see if major vitamins had anything close to what they said they did...none did.

The problem is the FDA does not regulate herbal supplements or vitamins. I never argue with a patient when they take a million vitamins, but I always gently suggest that real food is always your best source.

I read this over the weekend! What a bummer. As someone who (unsuccessfully) tried incredibly hard to increase a tiny BM supply w/ an array of supplements, it is unfortunate to think I could have been doing diddly squat.

I saw this in the NYT a day or two ago - totally bummed. As someone who was recommended by my medical provider to take Fenugreek, Moringa root, Mother's milk tea etc, I hate to think about what i may actually be ingesting :(

"Using a test called DNA barcoding, a kind of genetic fingerprinting that has also been used to help uncover labeling fraud in the commercial seafood industry, Canadian researchers tested 44 bottles of popular supplements sold by 12 companies. They found that many were not what they claimed to be, and that pills labeled as popular herbs were often diluted — or replaced entirely — by cheap fillers like soybean, wheat and rice."
