@red_seattle: Haha! Thanks for sharing. All in, I will be on bedrest for about 6 weeks (3 days of which was in the hospital). I haven't been allowed excursions except doctor's appts, and though I didn't work the first week after getting out of the hospital, I've been able to work from home. I will probably be released in 1.5 weeks when I'm 36 weeks and change so I'm trying to "enjoy" what I have left of bedrest ; )

But hang in there! It's survivable, and while I would've smacked you if you said it at the time, I do kind of long for bed-rest again. At least I got plenty of sleep! haha.

@winniebee: I was on bed rest for 7 weeks. I was able to work from home for 5 of those weeks. And I was on modified bed rest-- so 9 hours a day lying down, stopping everything if my contractions picked up (which they did, several times a week), and I was allowed an outing once a week if it was for less than 2 hours and non-strenuous. But no cooking, no going for walks or exercise, and the worst-- no sex. It was rough. But I was allowed off at 36 weeks, and then baby didn't show up until 40 weeks. That's life with a kid though right? You can't predict anything.

@mediagirl: That is a really good point! I rolled in some of those thank-yous into my shower thank you notes (thanks for the gift and thanks for visiting thing). My husband sent flowers to my mom and his mom as a thank you, too. His mom has made us about 15 meals (in person and brings frozen) and my mom comes down like 2 times a week.

@winniebee: oh hey! I have a PSA for you! :)

For those friends that have stopped by or brought you something, please remember to send them a thank you note. A small little thing like a thank you goes such a long way. I know you have a baby on the way and that will take up a lot of time after you're off bed rest but, Mr. WinnieBee (hehe) can get cards for you and stamps.

I had a friend who was on bed rest in the hospital for 4 months. I visited her every week. I took her, and her husband sometimes, dinner from their favorite places. Paid for their dinners, my gas, the parking at the hospital etc and never heard boo from her thanking me for any of it. I'm kind of old fashioned and think a thank you card goes so far. Especially when the gift is something that means so much - just their time.

@winniebee: awww that's so cool. My bro lives in Jersey so we don't see them often, but his in-laws are here in MA so they do visit from time to time. But they've got 2 kids so they don't get up here as much anymore. My parents are down in PA, but my mom's side of the family is up here in MA as well... Why doesn't everyone just move here?!?!? ;) I'm crossing my fingers that my parents will retire soon and move back. That would be awesome.

Must be sad to leave all your family soon...!! At least they can all be around for when the baby is born and in those fun early days!!

@winniebee: awww!! if she wasn't already a mom, you guys could be on bedrest together..!! And how great to have such a supportive mom. Is all that family close by?? If so, you're so lucky!! My parents lived within 30 mins of me until just 3 years ago, and I miss them so much!! I know if I were on bedrest, my mom would be over every day! She's coming to stay with us for 6 months on and off after baby #2 arrives and I can't wait.

@mrs. wagon: Did I mention my sister is on modified activity too with her pregnancy (not strict bedrest, more like seatrest)!? She's a month behind me, and has been on modified rest since 20 weeks (for a different reason)! But a lot of her restrictions have been lifted and so she probably will come by this weekend with her kiddos ; ) My mom has been flat out amazing this whole time. She's the best!

@chopsuey119: @mrs. wagon: Thanks! I feel like a brat for complaining, because most of my close friends have babies and work so it's not like it's easy for them to drop by. I think I'm channeling my annoyance at my younger brother who hasn't visited in 4 weeks (and lives in town) and my SIL who lives down the street and only came by on Easter with her family. On a positive note, I have a few friends who I did NOT expect to stop by, but have : )

@Mrsdaredevil: It is just so isolating! Even on the days when I have visitors, I have no other social interaction all day! And the pregnancy hormones just don't help....at all. I have had visitors three days this week, which really helps makes the week go by fast. It's already Thursday : )

@red_seattle: Agree! I don't need food or ice cream or magazines, just come on by! How long were you on bedrest?

YES! I totally agree. People wanted to do something (bring us food, etc.) but I kept saying "the best thing you could do for us right now is just visit me!" It got better once I was given the ok to start working from home, but still, it was so isolating. Hang in there!

I can't tell you how many emotional breakdowns I had to my DH telling him how alone I felt when I was on bedrest. Every single one of my friends stopped contacting me and I just felt like I had the plague. My DH started to feel obligated to stay home with me even when there were things he wanted to do because I felt so sad and alone. I completely feel for you.

*big big hugs*

Are there any friends you are close enough to that you could tell how you feel? Let her know that your only option for social activity right now is having visitors. Maybe she will offer to bring some takeout over and you guys can chat!

It will all be over soon....you may not even remember these emotions once your little boy comes! He is going to bring you so much joy.

@MsLipGloss - I don't think there's a way to get the pre-bills. They go right to the partner. But, the finalized bills are kept in the actual file so I copied some of those for one of my older cases so I could look at other entries. Hopefully that will help...

@LindsayInNYC: I don't know if this is an option for you, but when I got to the firm where I am now, I asked accounting for sample copies of pre-bills for client matters in my practice group. Also, I am not sure if you get to review pre-bills before they are finalized by a partner (if that's how your bills are managed), but I also reviewed the other attorney entries on the pre-bills to make sure I wasn't leaving any time on the table (or to see how they captured time for a particular event).

@WinnieBee and @MsLipGloss - thank you both for your reassurances! I graduated 4 years ago but have only been in the billing world just over a year now (plaintiff's work before that). My last firm gave zero guidance and I was constantly frustrated. Now I'm getting guidance but still feel lost because I'm relearning a new firm's approach to it. I asked another associate to see her billing since I can't access it myself and she was hesitant to give it. I printed previous bills for one of my files to look at on my way home tonight. I know it's an art but man, I can't wait until it just clicks! I'm at a super family friendly firm and it's a good fit for me so I really want it to work out (nevermind the bonus attached to the billing!)

@WinnieBee: Nah, it's not an exaggeration . . . after 7 years, that *second nature* was born of nothing short of blood, sweat, and sacrifice.

And I'm so glad you have been relieved of the billing pressure . . . it's amazing what people can live with on a daily basis, and while they chalk it up to *just another day*, it really is nothing short of fantastic and amazing.

@MsLipGloss: The relief of billing pressure has been amazing over the last 4 weeks -- I bill what I feel like billing and my firm is more than happy with that. In fact, they push back lots of the time. It is liberating! I agree with your analogy re: the whole wet suit thing. So maybe saying it's second nature is an exaggeration....it's more, I know what I'm doing and know how to maximize my days ; )

@WinnieBee: lol @ *fortunately*! And what great experience to work for a firm throughout school. I had no billing exposure prior to graduation . . . during school I clerked for a (federal circuit) court of appeals. Great for brief writing, but terrible for billing!

@LindsayInNYC: I will start by saying this . . . there are two types of people in the world, those that pee in their wet suits, and those that lie about it. Billing is an art, and in the beginning everyone struggles, whether they admit it or not. It gets easier to bill, but the hours don't change. I'm a 5th year (law is my second career), and I still kick myself when I realize I did not maximize my billing on a matter. It all adds up!

And I totally agree with what WinnieBee wrote - definitely find billing entries to review from more experienced associates . . . it really does help to see how time can be captured when it's organized properly. I had a lot of help from my DH who is also an attorney (although we practice completely different specialties).

And yeah, billing stinks! It is something that others can never fully appreciate unless and until they have experienced it and lived under the 24-7-365 pressure of a billing requirement.

@LindsayInNYC: Aw, welcome to the practice of law ; ) I'm a 7th year associate so (fortunately?) billing is second nature to me now. I also worked for a lawfirm throughout lawschool so found the transition pretty easy since I learned how to bill before I practiced law. I would suggest, though, that you review another more senior associate's billing entries to see how they capture their time and maybe even have one of them review your entries for you. But, overall, yes, billing stinks!!!
