@SweetiePie: thanks for this recommendation! I have PB blackout curtains but for some reason the ones in DD's room block less light than the ones in my son's room, so I ordered these to layer. if I could have my children sleep in an actual cave I'd be all about it :silly:

@ladybee: We have these from Amazon and they are great. They're paper and you just cut them to size with scissors and place in your window. We've had the same one for 2+ years now with no issue.

@ladybee: I've never spent that much on anything in my home, haha. Except like appliances and main furniture.

Wayfair/Joss&Main both have good options. And the ones I posted above aren't expensive at all - you can attach them to any existing curtains to make them blackout or buy ones you like at target or whatever and attach them.

@Amorini: omg. That’s what I just did for my 3mo 😂 we live in an apartment and are waiting for the building handy man to come and hang the hardware for the drapes and I couldn’t wait any longer. So I taped black heavy duty garbage bags over the window, behind the blinds. So with them closed you can’t tell but they are soooo good. So handyman saw us yesterday and said “I haven’t forgotten, I’ll call you” and DH looked at me and said “do we even need him anymore?” Hahahaha.
My only concern with keeping them up is that his room is eastern facing so he gets a lot of hot, direct sun most of the day and it worries me to have the hot sun hitting black plastic garbage bags. I mean, it gets HOT.
But for now, it’s amazing.

@bhbee: I think as long as you get true blackouts, most should be ok?
In my older sons room I have normal curtains that I got for decorating purposes. When I realized they didn’t block enough light I got these which attach to any curtain. They are awesome!

@Littlebit7: I know exactly what you mean and we were so surprised to find them in our MCM home here in the US. I had never seen them in a home in the US since living in Europe.

That said, the ones in DS’s room are a little touchy and so we totally cheaped out on black-out curtains. For about a year, I just taped black plastic bags to the windows. True confession. :silly: Worked great!

Blackouts for life. I travel with blackout curtains and my noise machines.
We are living in Europe and they have these glorious things called rolladen here (or at least that’s what they were called in Germany when we lived there also)
Metal exterior roll down shades. In my forever house I’m installing them.

@SweetiePie: Truth. And when you travel, bring these along: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IB7D1YQ/ref=asc_df_B00IB7D1YQ5487366/?tag=hyprod-20&creative=395009&creativeASIN=B00IB7D1YQ&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198057949814&hvpos=1o2&hvnetw=g&hvrand=9253317477209000910&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9031352&hvtargid=pla-377874293023

@bhbee: I'm the biggest believer in the black-out lifestyle. My son's room has 3 layers 😬. For my daughter's nursery, I just bought these after reading good reviews online. They didn't have the color I wanted in stock online so I went into Bed Bath and they located them, applied a 20% Off coupon to each panel, and shipped them to me for free. I got the "natural" color which I feared would still let light through, but they're great. https://www.bedbathandbeyond.com/store/product/sebastian-rod-pocket-insulated-total-blackout-trade-window-curtain-panel/3275469?skuId=61446915&utm_source=bam&utm_medium=cpc&utm_content=bam_premium_editorial

@annem1990: @MaryM: The crazy thing is, I’m an insane sleep trainer/baby sleep semi-expert. Haha. But I wasn’t practicing what I preach. I know they help but I just didn’t realize how much! We rent and could move any time since we are month-to-month right now (our lease ended) so I just kept putting it off. Finally realized even if they’re only up for a couple of months, that’s MONTHS of good baby sleep/time to myself. WORTH IT!

@annem1990: noise machine also. Major! Yesterday a friend came to visit and she peaked into the room since she also has an infant and I told her about what a difference they make. The room was cool, dark and the ocean sound machine was on. She just said “wow ok I get it. I could sleep better in this myself!”

We have blackout curtains in the nursery. Now that #2 is on the way we are moving DS (almost 3 years old) to a big boy room and I was going to skip the blackout curtains in his room but now I'm wondering if it will effect his naps. I might test it out but sounds like I may mot want to rock the boat.

Very long story short, my three-month-old has been all over the map with naps. So much unlike my first born. My firstborn had blackout drapes/curtains from the very beginning and he always napped really well (after some mild training). I never really made a direct correlation between the two. I knew they helped but I didn’t think that was such a big reason. My three-month-old has been driving me crazy and I never actually hung up blackout drapes for him for various reasons. Well I started noticing that his naps were actually great on dark rainy days. And then we visited a friend for a day and put him in a windowless dark room and he napped amazingly. So when we got home I decided to let him nap in my 3yos room with the blackout drapes.
He napped for 2.5 hours 3x that day! And practically every day since (going on a week).

If your babe isn’t napping great and you don’t have blackouts (not just blinds or regular curtains) TRY IT. I covered his room windows in grarbage bags to test it out and he just woke up from a 3 hour nap.

I felt compelled to share this information. I never thought it would make such a huge difference for him, but apparently it does! He’s also sleeping a little later in the morning too (7/7:30 vs 6/6:30).
