I didn’t know this till the last year either! Our nextfit has a limit of 40lb of child and we just hit 40 like in the last couple of days so I need to switch ASAP.
And yeah, ordered the Britax for our 2nd because of this! I don’t want to stress about this again so we’ll just do seatbelt install only.

I feel like seat belt installs are easier over-all anyway. The angle to tighten the belt is much easier to achieve with the belt rather than LATCH straps IMO. We have a Graco MySize, Cosco Scenera, and Harmony Defender and they've all been easier with the regular belt.

@looch: @Foodnerd81: @Truth Bombs: clicktight all the way! I really can’t stand doing a latch install now that I’m spoiled by the clicktight.

I think it’s especially common to not know if your kids are a bit older since the latch weight limits were only really mentioned a few years ago. But yes, @looch: that’s why I love the britax click tight installation! My 5 year old is just about at the weight limit but I never even tried the latch connectors in her seat sincethe seatbelt was so easy.

I think it's normal not to know, it seems to come up as people start looking for alternatives to the convertible car seat as their kids hit those height limits.

This is also one of the reasons I always recommend the britax click tight series of seats.

This was so not on my radar, but it turns out my daughter is exactly at the limit for her carseat/our cars LATCH. Guess I'll be fixing that this morning! Thanks!

The stickers on my car seats have the weight limits on them (basically says LATCH can only be used for children weighing up to 45 lbs on one, and I believe 40 on the other). I feel like most I’ve seen do, and it’s always in the manual.

@Mrs. Carrot: Thanks for the reminder - I just realized this a couple weeks ago. We're 5 lbs away from outgrowing the LATCH limit.

If your car seat was made after February 2014 it will have the lower anchor limit printed on the seat and in the manual. That will take into account the car's weight limit as well.

If your car seat was made prior to February 2014 you will have to look up the vehicle limit as well as the weight of your seat.

When forward facing a top tether does not have a weight limit. (That's the "t" in LATCH)

@Mrs. Carrot: I thankfully figured that out on a fluke before my son hit the limit a couple months ago. I also did a PSA :)

Great minds!

I might be the only person who didn't realize this until now, but in case it's helpful to anyone else, I just read that the LATCH system in cars apparently maxes out at 65 lbs TOTAL weight (child and car seat combined). My 5 year old is going to be in our Britax Marathon for as long as she can fit it, but it occurred to me after reading the post someone shared on my Facebook that we're almost at the limit for having her seat LATCHed (the Marathon is 20 lbs, and she's 44). So we'll be securing it via seat belt this weekend. Some more info here: https://csftl.org/whats-the-deal-with-weight-limits/ and tons around the Internet. I'm really surprised I didn't know this before, so glad I read it when I did.
