We lived in Brooklyn the first year of my DS’s life and I would carry his stroller up and down the subway stairs all the time. It was rare for people to offer help, and I nearly fell once too, it was so scary. Babywearing wasn’t always an option, depending on what I needed to do that day. Some of the NYC subway stairs are so steep. And if you don’t have a car seat with you, taking a taxi isn’t really a good option either (even ignoring the extra cost). </p> <p>I lived in Boston when my kids were babies and quickly learned which stations had elevators to use, but I can clearly remember the time my station had a broken elevator. I was lucky that in the minute I stood there figuring out what to do, not one but two men stopped and asked if I they could help and they helped me carry the stroller down the stairs. She fell (they are not sure if the fall caused her death or something caused her to fall) but at least her baby is ok. In many subway stations in NYC (and other cities!) there are no elevators and escalators are unsafe. So carrying the stroller is the only option.
