Glad your pup is OK. I didn't know there was any acute toxicity though - my dog absolutely loved grapes as a puppy and ate them for years until someone told me that it puts them at risk of kidney or bladder stones. This was after he had surgery for stones at 10 or 12 years old... we cut the grapes out of his diet after that, and the stones never came back. My pug ate an entire bag of yogurt covered raisins a few years ago. It was so scary! We didn't have pet insurance at the time and ended up paying $1600 when all was said and done. Scary. I have to remember that when we have kids. We had a scare of grapes, too. I was eating grapes and I forgot about them. I think there was only a few grapes left because they were the ones I didn't want to eat. We found the bowl empty and took my 48 lb dog to the animal hospital. They induced vomited abd luckily found the grapes mostly whole. The vet told us to keep an eye out for signs. Luckily, my dog was fine. I forget how much it cost but it was pretty expensive. I think almost $300-500. Yeah, we are extra careful around our two dogs now. Grapes: They report that dangerous doses begin at about 0.18 ounces of grapes per pound of dog weight. That’s 1.8 ounces (one or two grapes) for a 10-pound dog, and 3.6 ounces (three or four grapes) for a 20-pound dog. Raisins: About 0.07 ounces of raisins per pound of dog weight may be toxic. In real terms, that’s a mere 0.7 ounces of raisins for a 10-pound dog, and 1.4 ounces for a 20-pound dog. But some researchers say the amount of grapes/raisins eaten may not have any bearing on how much harm is caused to your pet. In their report “Grape and Raisin Toxicity in Dogs,” Michelle Savigny, DVM, and Douglass K. Macintire, DVM, DACVIM, DACVECC, of Auburn University discuss how a border collie ate a whole 16-ounce box of raisins and lived, yet a Labrador retriever (a larger dog) died after eating a slightly larger box of raisins. So here’s the take-home message: Any amount of grapes or raisins should be considered toxic." It does seems like there are different answers all over the web. However, the e-vet claimed that the research is really spotty and she doesn't believe they really know how much it takes. So who knows. Our pup is about 13lbs and is fed an occasional grape or M&M, but we don't stress about it. If he ate the whole bag, that would be another story! A few grapes here and there will be fine. Definitely be careful, but I don't think you need to keep your kids from eating grapes. My husband and I have been pretty careful to cage the dog when my LO is eating grapes, since she often shares her food with the dog. However, yesterday I gave my LO a cup full of grapes. She walked around and snacked on them while the dog was temporarily crated. She abandoned the cup on the back of couch and I forgot about it. Later, I let the dog out and heard her in the family room whining. I didn't think much of it, but a few minutes later, I went into the room and found her on the couch with the grape cup empty (she must have been whining about the fact that she wanted them, but couldn't get to them...but then she managed to climb up and get them). I called the e-vet and they said because she is small (~10-11 lbs) and grapes can be quite toxic, they needed to induce vomiting. I took her in, and she only threw up about 3 grapes, whereas I was pretty sure I'd seen more left in the cup. They said some of them may have gotten by, so they gave her activated charcoal and asked to keep her overnight to give her iv fluids and check her kidney functioning (via bloodwork) every so many hours. Fortunately, we have pet insurance, so we will "only" be out our $200 deductible, but this little adventure is going to cost $600-$1200!!! (We have to pay upfront and insurance will reimburse us). The vet called this morning and said she never showed any signs of toxicity, and as long as her labs look okay today, she can go home tonight. My husband and I are kicking ourselves though that we even chanced it in the first place and have resolved not to ever have grapes or raisins in the house again while we have a toddler in the house. It is just too hard to make sure that our LO doesn't feed the dog or stash her food somewhere where the dog to get to it, and this is a chance we don't want to take again! Just thought I'd mention it, especially for anyone who has a small dog and a toddler!
