So much! The upside to living in a big city. We have Madison Square Park in walking distance and a playground a block away. Our building also has great amenities like an enclosed garden with grills and a rooofdeck, so we like to use those in the evening. And we have a promenade to walk on the East River, and the ferry stop is on our street where we love to go and watch boats.

We are moving in a month and we'll be walking distance to Central Park (we are on the same street as the zoo) and will have a playground across from the front entrance of the building.
The new building also has an indoor pool and playroom that I can't WAIT to use!

We live in a small coastal town and pretty much all the amenities we visit on a weekly basis is within walking distance. We can walk to the beach, three great playgrounds, various green spaces (DD loves to picnic, fly her kite, and kick balls around), hiking trails, a small public pool, the library, DD's tot school (where we take classes and help out in the community garden), a local history museum, and family art center. Takes a few minutes to walk downtown to go out to eat and visit local shops (or visit the animal shelter when we have LO along), we stroll to church on nice mornings, and live a few streets away from where most local fairs and festivals are held. Overall, a tremendously walkable area! We rarely use the car, on weekends we stay in town.

we have 3 playgrounds in the local neighbourhood, two are attached to big sports ovals and one is in a walk-thru park across from the train station. None of them are particularly great, and I always have to scan the area for any stray beer bottles etc as these parks are a bit of a hot spot for night action. I prefer to take a short drive to some of the better playgrounds in neighbouring suburbs. My bestie has a beautiful one across the road from her house that is surrounded with a safety fence and has covers and picnic tables. so jealous!

half hour walk/5 minute drive to the local shopping strip, where the local library is - nice, clean, child friendly and a very short walk to mum's house.

there are also 5 kindergartens in the area, so the council knows there are lots of kids, I wish there were better playgrounds!

We have a lot of other local amenities that are close by (within 10 miles) but require driving. Splash pads, fountains, carousels, train rides, a ferris wheel, a lake, summer movies at the park...

We have tons of parks nearby and the riverfront area--which is a great place to ride bikes and go for walks. Plus our city has a ton of city events--farmer's markets, fairs, concerts, movies under the stars, etc.

And our town gives out free lunches to all kid residents the entire summer! In every single town park, kids can pick up a free boxed lunch (sandwich, fruit, side like chips or cookies, and a drink). It's pretty cool.

Downside is...no public pool! =( =(

We live right near downtown of our medium-sized city so we are close to lots of amenities! We are walking distance to a few parks with playgrounds, basketball courts, etc., a dog park (not exactly kid-friendly but a great amenity) and baseball fields/tennis courts, several public museums, and our local children's museum (small entry fee, but we will probably get a membership once DS turns 1). There is also a public pool that's technically within walking distance, but we'd have to walk kind of far and through a pretty sketchy neighborhood to get there, so it's more of a driving place for us. There are also a few really great parks within about 5 minutes driving distance - one has a carousel, a small train for kids, paddle boats, and theater/music performances!

We have a good amount of playgrounds/parks in our neighborhood. There's two within walking distance, but our township park is about a 5 minute car ride away, and it's gorgeous! DH and LO go there after he picks him up from school almost every day as long as the weather is nice!

@mrbee: We live outside of a small town, there's no amenities near by but some if we drive 25-35min away.
But, we live on over 50 acres of mixed bush with water front at the back of the property so hopefully when we have kids they will be entertained on our property. We also plan to build a play section in the yard with a tree house/slide/sandbox... basically everything I wish I had when I was a kid ahha. I'm excited to play with them on our property!

The main ones we use are playgrounds and parks (half a dozen at least) and the walking path along the river. There are also a couple libraries, a public roof garden, and a couple pretty areas with large fountains.

Not so much "public" amenities, but there is also a science museum and a mall within walking distance which we go to alot.

We live in the burbs/country - but we are in the part of town close to the little downtown so we can walk in about 10 minutes to get to the train into the city/ coffee, etc. The library and Rec center are only a 5 min walk from our house, there are three huge playgrounds close by, and the town is building a pool for the community that we will also be able to walk to!! There is a splash park and hiking trails a 5 minute drive away too! The ocean is also only 15 minutes away :)

We can walk/bike to "downtown"- where there is some places to eat that we like. There are two grocery stores within a mile, my favorite coffee shop is a mile away, the YMCA is 2.5 miles away and the library is 2 miles away.

Well within a 3 mile radius (about as far as I want to walk with kids), there is a lot! Three lakes, several libraries, countless parks, an amazing free zoo, ice cream made on campus from the agriculture cows! The entire downtown with a great children's museum, a terrace with free live music on the water, parks with free live music, another cool terrace with tons of free events. Within 1 mile there is amazing campfire pits and hiking trails and beaches, a cliff overlook park with campfire pits, at least 2 amazing libraries, several schools and many parks, 2 great pools to choose from, and an ice rink with warming house. My favorite: countless community gardens. We visit ours every night.

We have 3 playgrounds within a mile of our house and the neighborhood pool is about a mile away.
We have a huge park with baseball and soccer fields, running/biking paths, picnic pavilions and multiple playgrounds, a small zoo and a golf course that is a 5 min drive from our house. The bike paths connect to 2 other large parks, but that would be a 20 mile round trip bike ride. They are planning a bike path extension to our neighborhood that will make it a 2 mile ride to the park, but it won't be built until 2017.

We have a toddler playground across the street from our house and another playground attached to a big grassy park just a few blocks away. The main library for our town is also in close walking distance as is a swimming pool, splash pad, soccer field, track, and ice rink. There are tons of other parks and another pool in our town too, just a little further away. Part of the reason we chose to live here are all the great public parks and facilities.

Right now we us the two closest parks quite often and now that the pools are ope. We plan to use those a lot this summer!

There isn't anything within walking distance, and I live in the city. I really wish we had a playground that we didn't have to drive to. I can run to a couple of parks, but it's 3+ miles and I have to go out of my way to avoid a dangerous expressway interchange, so I would never be comfortable walking/running there with H.

We have a small playground 3 doors down from our house that we like to go to.

We live in the city, and we lucked out in that there's a public park and a bunch of playgrounds nearby. There's also a track at our local elementary school, where the kids ride their bikes and scooters. There's a pool that's within walking distance (barely), and the kids love going there in the summers.

Definitely appreciate the public amenities! We always underestimate their importance when picking a place to live... but it's probably one of the biggest factors in our kids' happiness!

What public amenities are near your home, and which one do your kids like?
