We live very close to DC and take DD (3.5 yo) to various Smithsonians and government building tours pretty often. She usually has a great time and remembers thugs she has seen for weeks

Museums are great for my toddler as long as we pick a place where it wouldn't be rude to run/trot and be sorta loud. Children's museums are obvious but we took our son to the Ag Museum yesterday that had a ton of tractors and combines and loaders and historical stage coaches and what not and he had a blast just running laps and looking and yelling. I think the key is to have low expectations in terms of the amount of time spent there. We can do 2-3 hours at a children's museum easily but the Ag Museum we were out in about 90 minutes but that was plenty just to get him stimulated and worn out for lunch. Granted he's only 30 months old.

My sister and I took my 3yo to the Natural History Museum yesterday. He loved it but it was exhausting. First of all, he did not want to leave any room, ever. So we had to carry him screaming out of the first dinosaur room in order to see the second dinosaur room. Lather, rinse, repeat. Some of the exhibits had these sorts of raised platforms, and he spent half the time playing on the stairs going up and down to the platforms.

The only reason we were able to exit the building without tears is that he fell asleep in the stroller. We were there from around 10:30-2:30 and ate lunch at the museum cafeteria.

This morning he said he wants to go to the museum again.

@Bao: that sounds kind of like a Nordic history museum my mom used to take my brother and I to when we were little. We went a bunch of times and LOVED it and still talk about to this day! I bet you'll have a great time!

We go to our state museum all the time! She couldn't care less about most of the exhibits but loves exploring the huge space and is into some of the kiddie activities. Give it a shot!

We've gone to the science museum during a special "toddler" event (we got in free as children's museum members) and even though a lot of it was over my LO's head since it is geared towards older kids/adults, he still enjoyed most of it. We are going to try the art museum soon since it's free. For a low cost I would definitely try it out!

Definitely! Go for it! Even the museum's we've taken her to with very little for kids she always has fun. Inevitably there are buttons to push or we play I spy games.

@yoursilverlining: great! This one really does have cool stuff, animals, old shops you can go into, trolleys you can pretend play in, old train station. So although it's not a "children's" museum I'm thinking they would enjoy it ( I hope!)

Yes, lots! How she likes them depends largely on what sorts of exhibits they have. Natural history museums have been bigger hits that art museums, generally.

Has anyone brought their LO to a public museum? How did they like it? We have a really nice one not too far away and I was thinking the girls would like certain parts of it. It would only be $10 for all 4 of us to go, so I was thinking of giving it a shot...
