Ha. Those of you who haven't been so sleep deprived you forgot to put a boob away are lucky! Once my kid started gagging and I had to pop him up to burp him ASAP before he lost his lunch. Boob was still out. At church. Oops.

I wouldn't blame yourself for your reaction. It's normal to feel surprise at things we aren't used to in our culture. But who knows what the deal was. In my state exposure of the breast near the time of breastfeeding (so not only the seconds the baby is latched on) is not considered indecent exposure explicitly in the law. I think it's hard enough to breastfeed without worrying that you are doing it discreet enough or covering quickly enough. This sounds more than a nip slip, sure, but I don't think there is a need to be like "that baby has been done nursing a whole half second!! Why is the boob still out?" (Not that you are thinking that, but some other comments sound like that!)

I'm more of a "you do you" kind of person. I feel guilty for judging this poor woman who I don't even know, so I'm just going to go with the thought that maybe the baby just had a blowout and she needed to deal with it quickly. Maybe she has thrush and is trying to air out her nips. Who knows.

I have never in my life been so tired that I wouldn't notice both of my boobs flapping in the wind at the grocery store..... Having a baby in close proximity is not a free pass for indecent exposure. If the baby isn't actively nursing, put the boobs away.

I live in Europe and I've seen a similar situation on more than one occasion. I once saw a woman just sitting with her boob out (in a museum) while the baby was nursing on the other side (and I had my own nursing baby with me). Maybe she was a visiting European? :silly:

I could not be any more into nursing in public, but there is just no good reason to have both!!! boobs just hanging out. No way. I'd lean towards her being so tired she forgot.

In that case, how old was the baby? Maybe the baby was very very newborn and she hasn't done this and she is out and about my herself the first time.... and like everyone said she probably forgot. But still. Something isn't quite right in the picture. What you described is what one would do.... at home...!

I totally get things being exposed when you are starting out, transitioning or dealing with a squirmy one but this just seemed odd.

Honestly she kept looking around like waiting for someone to stare so she could snap at them. She was not a frazzled, un showered in a bad place mess of a mommy. She was def comfortable and put together in what she was doing! It was so odd...

ya, i got rid of my cover after using it a few times because it was more annoying than anything else. And i also nursed by just pulling down my first, so fairly exposing the breast that was being nursed on. But i would always put it away after! Like as fast as possible. i am with @blackbird: and think maybe she didn't realize. i did a poster presentation at a conference once right after nursing my 5 months old and didn't realize until i got home that my nursing bra was rolled down the whole time. i was wearing a shirt over it obviously, but my boobs must have looked mis-shapen with one covered by a bra and the other only covered by a shirt!

hahaha. Awww.

Wait, so she is nursing and she just walks around and basically stripping? How does she nurse walking around, I am actually not quite getting it. How big is the baby?

I am so sorry you are confused. But honestly, either I am misunderstanding the description, or my first reaction is, is she mentally stable? Does she look like she is troubled mentally, or just a really regular but disoriented mom? Or does she look like she's the chairman of the nudists club? :P

I am all for breastfeeding in public (I myself breastfed my son in an airport terminal in LAX right next to a construction zone where construction workers walked in and out, and I couldn't cover because my son won't eat, but I was very very discreet, so you can't tell what I was doing unless you really really look), just that public nudity, as in fully exposing both breasts in public, is against the law, is that right? Breastfeeding isn't, public nudity is, I thought.

And how does she expose both of her breasts and walk around... where is the baby when she had both breasts exposed? That is just so bizarre and funny. I can't help but think is that baby even real :P

So I'm trying to evaluate something that happened today...

I went to a grocery store this afternoon...on the way in a saw a mom nursing. She was uncovered but like most it was still very discrete - I obviously had no issue with her nursing.

As I cruised the aisle I came past her again...she now was on to the second side and to my somewhat surprise had the first breast completely exposed still. At first I was a little shocked but the more I cruised and thought I figured maybe her nipple was sore and she was air drying it. Fine - initial thoughts past...I've had cracked sore nipples ... So you do what you do.

When I was checking out she was on the same bench...changing her baby...both breast exposed fairly completely. I was shocked ... Just shocked. I went about my checkout and when I got to the car was trying to figure out my feelings.

On the one hand I was horrified that I was judging this woman for her nursing in public. On the other hand I could not help but feel that what she was doing as the feeding went in was odd. I can't shake the negative feeling I have towards her - it honestly felt she was willing a reaction to come (which from what I saw she did not get) ... And it truly felt she was flaunting herself.

Then again on the other hand I feel icky for those feelings and want to believe she was doing what she needed to to feed her baby...but honestly who nurses this way? Am I ignorant? I personally prefer to be covered but totally get that some babies and moms don't care for covers. Plus nursing is discrete the way I have done it...

Someone explain to me what I am missing here from her side so I can understand?!?!
